"If you jump a net will appear" Needed to hear that Fred! Just took the leap myself and went all in on this music career, spent a ton of money investing in a studio and tryna make it happen! Thanks for the good word and best of luck on your new gear!

Much love from NC, don’t ever be afraid to change it up! It keeps things interesting. Keeping your self on your toes makes life a ballet! I’ve been jamming to Minnesota off “Bend To Break”, and that song slaps! I Love your repertoire Fred, it really hits home for me like no other. Can’t wait for the next album! Please hurry! Haha

Hello Fred, I am your big fan from Korea! It's Kinna sad that I will not be seeing the original studio, but giving you best wishes for your new studio!! Love all your videos:) Hope your new studio also looks amazing!

I can’t wait to see the upgrade! My ‘studio’ is an old bedroom. Just about a year ago I upgraded a bunch of stuff - got a new computer, got actual studio monitors (Kali audio IN-8) and tried to set everything up in a proper way. It was definitely a daunting undertaking but I felt I had reached the limitations of my old setup. You’ll totally be glad you upgraded!

Totally get it. There’s a point where you can’t think your way out of worry. Leap of faith is where it’s at. Wise words from your wife. Regardless of whether you’ll miss it or not, you’re living! Good stuff Fred.

Ah hell yeah man!! So excited to see what you pick up and how it changes the space. I have a feeling it'll bring new life into the studio. I change my studio space slightly every few months to see if it feels better or sparks an idea. Often it does even if I end up switching things back. Any excuse to look at my space differently is helpful, hope the same for you!

It will be good. Happy for you. I hope the new studio equipment brings you as much joy as WYWTB has brought me over the years...and A Year and Change has been bringing me. Can't wait to see it!

Well dang Fred, this video got me a little misty to be perfectly honest haha. “Jump and the net will appear” sounds exactly like where I am right now and where you were before quitting your day job. I’m about to quit my job in a couple months that I’ve been at since 2014 and it’s absolutely frightening, but I know it’s the right call for me and my family. No idea what my next step is but I feel exactly what you said, feels like the only way to move on is to take the leap and just follow my passion. Life’s too short to be doing stuff that doesn’t fulfill you. Looking forward to seeing the new gear from ya!!

You’re right when you say life is short. I figured if I ever regretted quitting, I could always go back and get a different job that I probably wouldn’t like, but I’ll tell you, I haven’t looked back for a second.

Right now I'm stuck with a home studio, but I definitely feel the creature of habit sentiment. I started college for Audio Production about 10 months ago after studying engineering on my own 6 years prior and I have to say the studio itself really hasn't changed drastically in its design lol. Of course I've upgraded gear and added things here and there but...I know where everything is and if I change it I'll spend a couple weeks getting used to the change of where I put everything lol.

Fred, you should do a video series on your approach to writing, recording and the mixing of a song. Either way thanks for the videos. 👍

Damn. I can’t wait to see what you’ve been doing to your studio. My creative space isn’t really a “studio” - my setup is just my UAD Apollo Solo going to my MacBook Pro M1. The only mic I have is an SM57 and surprisingly works great for my vocals. As of now I do not own any studio monitors - I track and mix through headphones, however I do plan on getting a pair of studio monitors once I’ve saved enough money. In my opinion, mine’s a fairly humble, but effective (for me) setup.

Hey Fred! I'm a sound editor/mixer workin out in Burbank, CA. Is your setup stereo or 2.1 with the LFE Subwoofer. Just curious as to how you handle all the low end stuff. Love the channel!

Hey Fred! How do you approach mic selection and placement on your famous 4x12 greenback cab? I think you have mentioned before that you like to combine a 421 and an sm57, but I was wondering about placement and the nuances of getting the right blend. Thank you so much, you are my guitar hero.
@TheColorFred Жыл бұрын
Thanks for writing! You're right, I normally use a sennheiser 421 and an sm57. I check the soundwaves in Protools to make sure they're in phase and if they're not, I move the later one closer to the cab or move the earlier one away from the cab until they are matched. The idea I had with these 2 mics was the 421 picks up the low end so I use a Universal Audio plug-in that is older and in my mind more "dull". The UA-610B. Then I use the 57 for the hi end and I use the Neve 1073 preamp (plug-in). That I'm making sound more crisp. I tend to keep the 57 a little higher in the mix but it depends how "big" the guitars need to be or how much I need them to stick out. That's what the difference between the two mics give me. The last thing I'll say about placement is, I'll sometimes angle the 57 so that rather than being straight on the cab, it will be more straight on with the angle of the cone if that makes sense. Bc I always put the mics somewhere on the cone and not right in the center of the speaker. Let me know if any of this helps!!
