I wish people would go back to the old USB Type B for slow speed coms such as these, simply because the old huge typeB was actually fairly robust mechanically speaking! You can also get latching (normally physical screw together) connectors from people like Bulgin that include a USB-B plug / socket in them for a connection that can be waterproof, vibration proof, and very mechanically robust...

If you look at the Duppa website. this is exactly what he's developing right now. Including USB-B connector.

7:00 - Hi Andy, very pleasant video as usual. But one thing to "Mecker 😁". The USB-Isolating adaptor from duppa are not using optical but magnetic respective capacitive coupling micro circuits. This results in smaller device size as well faster data rates by reducing power consumption at the same time. Enjoy the rest of your Australian winter season. Greetings from actually hot and thundery Germany

Keep up the good work and looking forward to see that fugure hit the magic number!! Cheers Ken

Great video. So much info again. I've bought earlier board from Duppa, cables, various other ebay interface adapters to expand Victron system. Waiting on cells. It's hard to exclude invading bugs, as long as u have roll-a-door on shed. Mice, snakes, cockroaches can all get past given opportunity. You love the morning sunlight check out the door, and somehow don't think we'll ever see a video about a relay-contact driven, toxic gas squirter, activated at midnite, or 30 mins after last motion detected. Burglar's would hate that too.

Silly me as i now have no use for it as i'm using a Raspi and need USB on one end in order to connect my new shunt. my two DIY cables work fine with my charge controllers but it seems others have had issues adding the shunt with the DIY cables. Hello Andy, The solution to the battery percentage problem in Jk-bms is this: in the bms application where you had 1% reduce the battery capacity to, for example, 220Ah and the battery charge percentages will change then set the correct capacity again kind regards Darek

I bought this adapter a year ago. But unfortunately not very happy with it. It would not work with the Orion XS 50A DC-DC charger. It kept losing connection. On all 4 ports and with all 4 cables I purchased. It works great with the Smartshunt though. So I still had to buy an original cable 🙈 No problems with the original Victron cable, so no faulty product. Maybe just bad luck that it wasn’t working with that particular Victron product…

The USB to UART device is definitely useful. I am using my Raspberry Pi 2 Model B as a Cerbo GX since it was just laying around after I upgraded to a Pi 4 (which is being used to pick up ADSB data and transmit to FlightAware). I have a Victron 150/45, the 500A/50mV Victron Shunt, and a AC energy meter connected. As well as a wireless receiver for a keyboard. The glue that the company that produces Velcro uses doesn't like heat. I have to occasionally replace the velcro on my USB hub used for my Quest 3

In my case I just used the VE-CAN to connect my Victron solar charge controller to the Raspberry pi using the Dual CAN board. I basically daisy chained 2 controllers together and connected a cable from the 2nd controller to the Dual CAN board. I noticed you have 2 ve can controllers. You can try this and have 2 less Ve-direct port to worry about.
@OffGridGarageAustralia6 ай бұрын
Only two of my MPPTs have the CAN comms port. All other devices have only VE.Direct.
@jameswieser28576 ай бұрын
Until you find or make a new case. You can just put a piece of Velcro around the plate and and the clear plexi to keep the pi from slowly pulling from the glue. And it will has a side effect to hold the can board to the pi also until the case is made.

Hello Andy! I would love to hear your opinion on something... Just yesterday I installed a new 10kW hybrid inverter. At my 5.6kW system, I would connect the 48V diy LifePo4 battery while the 160A breaker/switch is off. Then I would flip the breaker and the system would start. Unfortunately with this new inverter, the JK BMS sees it as a short circuit, but after 30S it gives power again and the inverter is powered. Then I turn on the Inverter switch... On the short circuit incident, I hear a pop... I am worried that I might have damaged the capacitor... I wasn't able to test a load yet, since the AC side is not yet connected, but the inverter seems to be working "correctly". That whole thing got me worried, so I plan to not turn off the battery again until I connect a precharge system (a resistor and a dual breaker to charge the capacitors...). I have seen you just turning on and off your battery breakers on your DIY batteries. It is of any concern to you? Or because it is a victron system (potentially with a precharge sequence) you are not concerned at all? I would really appreciate your input and I hope I didn't fry my new inverter... Oof...

I've used liquid electrical tape (it's a liquid, not tape) to seal ends and prevent bugs gettign under heat shrink on small electronics. Also, why not run those adaptors closer to the charge controllers so you only have 2 USB cables from the Raspbery Pi for the majority of the distance?

You can get some scrap fiber optic cable then hot glue one end to the LED and the other end you can make a plate and glue them to it putting the fiber into small holes so you can see the light.. Or you could solder wires to the LED's on the board and use a LED on the other end..

@grafmarzipan98343 ай бұрын
My Victron charging controllers are recognized by the Duppa, but the JK-BMS is not. If I use a different adapter, the JK-BMS appears after a few seconds. Does anyone have an idea?

I've got one of these, and they are the best. I wish they made a JK BMS (JST GH SMT 1.25mm Pitch 4 Pin) to Duppa 4-port USB to UART adapter cable. I would order one right away.
@upnorthandpersonal6 ай бұрын
Problem is that the JK has battery voltage on the VCC pin of the UART. Connecting that to the power pin of the DuPPa would destroy it.
@leumel9006 ай бұрын
Couldn't you just disconnect Vcc then?
@ZeronicMatrix6 ай бұрын
@@upnorthandpersonal I already know about that and it won't be hard to work around, just don't connect that pin. Additionally , if you need the power, we can just use a step down circuit to go from the max voltage the BMS can do down to 5v easily.
@upnorthandpersonal6 ай бұрын
@@leumel900 It's an isolated converter, so you need power on both sides. If you don't connect the Vcc, it won't work.

Why do we need isolated again?
@Ether_Void6 ай бұрын
Because the signal ground connection is made directly with ground of the charge controllers this is required for communication to work (since voltages of digital signals are measured between input pin and signal ground). However if the charge controller doesn't isolate the connection this signal ground is also connected with either the solar input or battery output (or both depending on how switching works). This can cause multiple issues. - Currents can flow between the signal grounds which causes the signal levels to be offset and potentially break connection it could also melt the signal wires if the currents are too high. - If you have 2 charge controllers on 2 different system on different ground potentials adding a common signal ground may cause a dead short. - Due to the connection of ground over both the bus and the signal connection you have a ground loop which is more prone to electromagnetic interference. - Any failure on one converter could cause a voltage spike on the signal wires. If the connection isn't isolated this will cause both the host computer and other controllers to be potentially damaged as well.
