The drop across the filter is meaningful as long as whatever is open downstream is consistent. Nice bit of plumbing for everything.

I know this is an older video, but I made a similar system and used a Pentek 150367 filter housing . Uses much larger bag filters (about $6 each) and is made of polypropylene for higher durability and chemical resistance and includes a pressure gauge. A lot cheaper than a steel bag filter housing but quite a bit nicer than those canister filters from a big box store. Freshwater systems has them for $150

John, I am an avid listener to your podcast (have binged all episodes 3 times now the last few months). I'd LOVE to see an updated video of this using the updated all metal cylinder grimsmo has found. My father an I just sent a deposit this week for a brand new Haas Mini Mill 2. As a tiny basement run operation, this is a HUGE step. Looking to into a filtration system as a first step before even adding coolant to the machine. If you can't do an updated video, would you be able to provide the part number for the "better" filter capsule?? Thanks for all you do.

Ran a VMC for one of my contracts and they would skim the oil off the sump and run it back through the machine instead of buying "expensive machine oil". They had 3 lasers and Hydraulic Turret Press too. Maintenance was an afterthought. Like your setup. They had a 50" wide belt sander that used a coolant system with a roll of paper to filter the aluminum dust similar to the cheese cloth you use. Float control rolled the full paper up when the sump levels varied due to clogging. Worked pretty good. Aluminum dust is potentially very explosive due to the gases it creates mixing with water. It eventually died after I left working there, they never cleaned or lubed it.

I work in a plant that has multiple machines filtered through a railroad car sized filtration/chip extraction system but we still use a bag filter system at the machines and it is very effective at keeping the fines under control.It is also part of the operator's daily machine checks to observe the gauges and report any out of spec pressure drops that could indicate the filter clogging. And ain't that Mcmaster-Carr the best thing ever! love their service!

Adding the pressure gauges is important for knowing the differential pressure between filter element sides, but you need to ensure to know how much is the correct delta P of the filter, as well ensure regular calibration of the gauges. Thank you for all your videos.

Double double uploads! Wonderful treat while I am stuck out here in FL... Waiting to get to Boston, then back down to houston, with a final 2 days stop in Zanesville... And home in SoCal after all of this travel. I am still laughing after that thanksgiving special!!! Pre filters are a great addition, as well as a good chip separator. I have set my small flood coolant to run open center with a high bypass oil cartridge filter (5 micron or 1 micron depending on what I need) so it filters more than just what is used to cool. It helps keep the coolant in great shape about 3* longer, assuming I dont make a mess of it.

NYC CNC I had a 4.5*20 commercial filter housing from axeon I got from a commercial job. It's an axeon SDF filter, 200640. Don't remember the part number for the housing though. They range from 50 to 1 micron. Works best with soluble coolants. Oils get picked up to easily and it defeats the purpose.

Hey John, If you want to get the absolute best performance and lifetime out of your coolant, get a fish tank air pump and air stone for your coolant tank. I've been running one in mine with noticeable results. Oxygenating your coolant has multiple benefits, including the health of your work environment. I can recommend the low cost pump I bought from Ebay that comes with everything you need in a kit for under $7 shipped from the USA.... pump, hose, 2 air stones, T fitting, flow control and suction cups to keep the hose in place. I run it 24/7 with no issues. I'm not affiliated with the seller, just wanted pass on something good I found.
@SupremeRuleroftheWorld
@SupremeRuleroftheWorld 7 жыл бұрын
please explain how airating the coolant causes any health inprovement? i am really struggeling to find a reason. you want to keep it closed off and away from people and allow the coolant in the tank to settle. putting a air hose in it negates that very idea.
@Qyonek
@Qyonek 7 жыл бұрын
I think, that airating prevents anaerobic organisms to grow in coolant.
@innovativecnc3928
@innovativecnc3928 7 жыл бұрын
You need to read about anaerobic bacteria and flood coolant! No, sealing up your coolant will cause dangerous bacteria growth. Aerating, contrary to intuition, will NOT cause your coolant to evaporate more quickly or let off dangerous gasses. DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH if you don't believe me...I'm just trying to help.
@JaakkoF
@JaakkoF 7 жыл бұрын
The little oilfilm that is on top of the coolant prevents air from getting in and thus anaerobic organisms start growing and it gets really bad and really smelly quickly. Aerating the coolant kills them or prevents their growth in the first place, just like the coolant gets aerated when it is in use, splashing and cycling around.

Teflon tape is meant as a "lubricant" to allow tapered pipe threads to bind less and therefore seat more fully creating a better seal. It was never intended as a sealant - although nearly everyone uses it so and gets by with it. Best practice: Teflon tape for lubricity and pipe sealant for sealing. A second suggested add-on to your coolant tank - a tramp oil skimmer to pull way oil out.

At 2:18 you mention the cheesecloth for pre-filtering chips from your coolant return. Have you thought about stainless mesh? I'm just thinking it would hold up better. I've used this mesh for weather-protecting speakers (it really helps keep rain out of the front since the mesh spacing is so tight), but it might be a good long-lasting filter media for your use too. It's 0.0045" dia 304 SS, 100 wires per inch with 140 micron openings. It's 36" wide and is available in a 100' roll, or by the foot. www.twpinc.com/100-mesh-woven-stainless-0045

Get a 1" thick blue AC Filter pad. The kind that looks like a giant scotch brite pad and put it in your coolant return basket. It filters air down to 3 microns and coolant goes through it like it not even there. I have a morning and after lunch maintenance checklist and one item is to check the coolant filters on each machine. Chips can build up fast and overflow the basket washing chips into your sump. If its getting a mound of chips we scoop them into a dust pan and put them in our recycle bins then use a shop vac to vacuum the filter in place removing 80% of the remaining chips. A couple times a year re replace them. They are cheap. We get rolls from MCMaster. www.mcmaster.com/2069k209

I wish HAAS had a better coolant system overall. I have had to modify the coolant on every Haas I have had so far. Leaks and filtration. My latest Super Mini Mill is a big improvement with zero leaks, but it is a major pain to keep the chips out of the coolant. Seems like it should be a higher priority.

Any tips on what kinda DIY solutions you're looking for your SMM? I have same issue with my MM2, while I can build these 20 micron post filters, I can't prevent chips going into the tank. I tried to cover drain holes inside the machine with fine stainless mesh, but it seems like small chips are still able to get into the tank through drain holes on chip conveyor bottom.

I have been debating cleaning my Mini Mill tank with a magnet. Since I mainly cut 95% steel. The ones that pick up nails should work. They are about a 12" long. Dunk it right in the tank on a metal rod handle. I could sweep my tank in minutes. What are everyones thoughts on this?
@nelsonbrum8496

You could also have the coolant flow out of the machine onto a large magnet. That would catch most of the fines before they make it into the sump. Then just clean the magnet at the end of the day, or first thing in the morning after the coolant has drained off of it.

I know that this is an older video but are you still running this set up? If so how does the filter canister hold up? I made one of these on my CNC knee mill and the canister kept cracking. I presumed it was due to the coolant interacting with the plastic.

Also I buy a lot from MSC who also has a bunch of odd items. I guess because I was an ENCO customer too and also buy quite a bit I get better pricing than McMaster gives me. Case in point I was looking at a Brown and Sharpe test indicator yesterday on MSC's website and I see they are now made in CHINA needless to say I did not order it. I wonder how your coolant pressure is so low. In our EC-1600 is a 300 psi pump and in our VF-7 1000 psi. None of these filters could be installed to a 1000 psi system as they would just explode. But it looks nice on your machine and I would recommend to add a oil skimmer also.

300 psi / 1000 psi are the pressure levels of the two different through spindle coolant systems. This filter system is for the much lower pressure flood coolant system that runs on a separate pump.

The holes are molded smooth, and running a fastener into the hole acts like a roll tap, creating threads. There are specific coarse thread screws designed for these types of pre-existing holes. Just look at any of the screws you remove from plastic bodied tools when taking them apart. You could probably find those screws on McMaster also (If they don't come with the filter housing/bracket).

on the pump there should be a sticker, one for the motor & one for the pump section, telling you the head and presure etc high presure pumps tend to be multi stack types on our machines where we have 50bar and 100bar pumps, they push the coolant through a inline hydraulic pressure filters, commonly they use tend to use 50micron filter followed by a 10micron , larger one tends to be a stainless so some times can get by simply washing these out.. the 10micron tends to be glass so they do clog after awhile...but the 50 takes the bulk of stuff.. depends on materials cutting i find determins life. fine fitlering becomes a key note when you have through spindle coolant (TSC) as you need to keep that spindle connector in good shapre or they damage easy and then leak. for the return, afew of our machiens have the filter type like you show, but we have what they call a paper filter roll, which is a fine paper medium , comes on a roll and comes in various filter grades, running on a feed bed so the paper keeps getting renewed for coolant life, PH is one thing you need to be on top of, this stops it splitting more than anything. if its a smell then thats more on the bioside of things. using DI water and mix to top up with is also a big help in tank life i have found also. with the right maintaence and coolant you can get a very long tank life from cutting fluids. , as has been said before here oil skimmer helps big time too, i find the disk type works best over the belt and others. but then tend to work best when the tank is sitting and the oil can level on top to be dragged out, when in use the oil tends to get mixed back into the coolant . depends how good your cooalnt is at rejecting tramp oil... even turning the pump on every few days for awhile can help keep coolant life up too keeps things moving. i think this is a topic you can talk about for days/weeks,

Even better: magnetic filter. Removed sub-micron particles, doesn't get clogged and is super easy to build with a bunch of magnets inside a stainless tube. Make it so that you can remove the tube for swiping off the collected debris or a way of getting the magnets out so the crud falls off.

looking at the pressure drop i would seriously recommend getting at least one more filter next to the current one. this is way too much flow for these type of filters. do not look at the total pressure, look at the drop and the amount of flow. the pump you have is capable of pushing a LOT of coolant. putting all that into such a small filter is asking a lot and i might even expect it to implode if you forget to look at the pressure gauge.
@nyccnc
@nyccnc 7 жыл бұрын
Would love to hear more on this - how can you quantify the flow rate of these filters?
@princebatswater
@princebatswater 7 жыл бұрын
A manufacturer can't really quote a flow rate for their filter because it depends on the amount of contamination in the fluid being filtered which directly affects how "blocked" the filter is. As noted above, the delta pressure across the filter is what matters and I agree, for a new filter your pressure is too high. I would suggest contacting your local Donaldson rep about a filter head to take an automotive style, truck/heavy equipment size spin on fuel or oil filter. Or maybe something from their bulk fuel delivery filter range.

Next time, install differential pressure gauges across the filters ... or transducers to monitor electronically with e.g. an Arduino that shows go/nogo status locally as well as sending data to a workshop monitoring "server", which can take appropriate action. www.mcmaster.com/#2238k24/=1ah9dc5 See e.g videos on MQTT by Andreas Spiess. It's very clever stuff that does as much or as little as you define. Also see Node Red to use as your IoT (Internet of Tool) server. 😀
