I love to hunt Bob whites. Always thought they were quail. Hmmm!

They're actually called bobwhite partridges or simply bobwhites, bobwhites are partridges not quails, bobwhites belong to the subfamily Dendrortyginae, where members are referred to as new world partridges.

@Ben B, actually, Phasianidae is restricted to only the pheasants, monals, monal partridges, and tragopans, the jungle partridges, old world partridges and quails, grouse, turkeys, koklass pheasants, chickens, bamboo partridges, francolins, spurfowl, peafowl, arguses, peacock pheasants, crimson-headed partridge, indochinese forest partridges, snowcocks, dwarf quails, malagasy partridge, and desert partridges are all relocated to the families Rollulidae, Perdicidae, Tetraonidae, and Gallidae respectively, the latter three of these families are actually more closely related to the Odontophoridae family than they are to Phasianidae, with the family Perdicidae (Old World Partridges and Quails) being the sister group to Odontophoridae (New World Partridges and Quails), both families are classified under the superfamily Perdicoidea (True Partridges and Quails), both families are split into two subfamilies, for Odontophoridae (New World Partridges and Quails) the subfamilies are Dendrortyginae (New World Partridges) consisting of two genera Colinus (Bobwhites) and Dendrortyx (Wood Partridges) and Odontophorinae (New World Quails) with seven genera Philortyx (Banded Quail), Oreortyx (Mountain Quail), Callipepla (Crested Quails), Rhynchortyx (Tawny-Faced Quail), Cyrtonyx (Black-and-White-Faced Quails), Dactylortyx (Singing Quail), and Odontophorus (Wood Quails), while for Perdicidae (Old World Partridges and Quails) the subfamilies are Coturnicinae (Old World Quails) with five genera Ophrysia (Himalayan Quail), Perdicula (Bush Quails), Coturnix (Bronze Quails), Anurophasis (Snow Mountain Quail), and Synoicus (Brown Quail) and Perdicinae (Old World Partridges) with only four extant genera being Lerwa (Snow Partridge), Ptilopachus (East African Partridges), Alectoris (Stripe-Faced Partridges), and Perdix (Common Partridges), interestingly, the Galloidea superfamily contains the families Tetraonidae (Grouse, Turkeys, and Koklass Pheasants) and Gallidae (Chickens, Bamboo Partridges, Francolins, Spurfowl, Peafowl, Arguses, Peacock Pheasants, Crimson-Headed Partridge, Indochinese Partridges, Snowcocks, Dwarf Quails, Malagasy Partridge, and Desert Partridges) and is the sister group to the superfamily Perdicoidea, leaving the superfamily Phasianoidea, which now contains only the families Rollulidae (Jungle Partridges) and Phasianidae (Pheasants, Monals, Monal Partridges, and Tragopans) to be the most basal of the three superfamilies of the suborder Galli (Laurasian Gamebirds).

@@benb2289 dendrortyginae has exactly zero google results. If bobwhite quail were misclassified I would think PF/QF would be on the forefront of correcting that. We would here Bob StP talk about it all the time.
