September in MONTANA! 2022 Sharptails & Huns Part 1

The calendar has rolled over to September and we're heading west to Montana chasing the flush for sharptails and huns.

Awesome video! Loved seeing the dogs work. Sidenote: you stepped right over a celt stone at 18:30. You can see it right above the bird. It's the stone that looks like a hatchet and has grooves in it.

I'm planning my first wild bird hunt to Montana for sharptails next fall and I honestly feel like I have no idea what I'm doing. Lol. Are the birds plentiful enough that they're relatively east to find? I plan to hunt public land in Eastern Montana.

I hurt for you when you switched to the auto and it failed to cycle on the first covey rise. I noticed something that i noticed the other day in one of my dove videos when the gun failed to shoot. I jerked more than I would like to think I would when I pulled the trigger.

Good luck hunting and safe travels out there! I had just cleaned the gun and that was the first shot through it 🤦‍♂️ Shotguns have pretty heavy trigger pulls, 8-10lbs. I believe that's where the jerk comes from. Good luck the rest of the season!

How many boxes of shells do you generally carry with you? When I first started bird hunting I carried two boxes of 20 gauge and even though it was evenly distributed it felt so heavy in my bird coat.

I run the intermediate. My biggest dog is 35 LB. a 50 LB dog is probably right on the line between an intermediate and large.

Thank you! All 3 of my dogs are Brittanys, as well. American Brittanys. I don't always shoot because I want the dog to point the bird, and with a couple of my younger dogs it would be easy for them to come unglued and stop pointing if I just started shooting at whatever birds were flying. Just curious ....how do you preserve your harvested birds on an extended hunt?

I try and eat a fair amount of them as we go, starting with the oldest. I keep them in a yeti cooler with ice, and they will last several weeks if stored properly. If a bird was gut shot it gets ate sooner than later, this way I’m only keeping the birds that did not have their meat contact gut matter stored for an extended period of time. I don’t rinse the birds after cleaning, water breeds bacteria growth. And I double bag them in freezer bags so they don’t puncture and absorb water from the cooler and don’t leak out blood into the cooler. I’ve stored birds close to 4 weeks doing this.
