Engine tuner here. I've tuned countless TI-VCT Sigma 1600 engines. The VVTs on these engine are very powerful. They have so much swing with larier cams, the overlap becomes so great the air will go straight in and out. Causing a misfire. You can see the torque dip at around 3000rpm which I expect it's got a bit too much overlap. In short in not surprised by this. I've done sigma engines with 220hp in "top spec" form (that is a fully built engine though). I bet this will be decent to drive. They only weight 1000kg ish. Same as a mk2 golf GTI

The big advantage aftermarket tuners have is that they don't have to worry about emissions, variable fuel quality and reliability anywhere near as much as the manufacturers have to. Makes a big difference to what figures you can get out of an N/A engine, still nowhere near the gains for forced induction but +15 bhp is well in the realms of believable.
@TassieLorenzo2 ай бұрын
+15bhp is a good effort on an N/A! With things like the Honda S2000 or Civic Type R you are lucky to get +5bhp with a remap on a mechanically standard car, as it's already optimised (but already doesn't meet emissions beyond about 2011, of course!). In the Civic Type R (2.0L), the cylinder head does support an extra 30-40bhp before porting with use of the right parts (intake manifold, header, drop-in cam) but the S2000 doesn't as it is already at that 240bhp/2.0L mark!
@Markking16782 ай бұрын
That's the whole point isn't it?
@arekb5951Ай бұрын
Yeah, even with turbo engines aftermarket tuners are tapping into the reserve that makes the engine have the same power at elevation for example. I've had a remap done pretty much at sea level, the tuner maxed the turbo out and the car would go into limp mode every time I floored it during my French Alps trip due to turbo not being able to achieve set boost pressure at elevation.

Later, from the first S80 onwards (and late S/V70:s as far as I can remember) they did away with this and made all 20 valve, but there was still a 140 and 170. So if you tuned the 140...

@TassieLorenzoАй бұрын
Most cars have good exhausts as standard nowadays though -- all mandrel bend, usually pretty large diameter (though it depends, 65mm exhaust is typical for a 2.0L turbo which is plenty though, 60mm is still used on Japanese 2.0L turbo cars to keep the noise within strict Japanese limits but even that doesn't cost that much power).
@DaveSpecCАй бұрын
@@TassieLorenzo the bends and diameter usually aren't the problem, the silencers are.
@TassieLorenzoАй бұрын
@@DaveSpecC Sometimes! But road cars have the goal of being quiet, which aftermarket exhausts often (very blatantly!) ignore. Engines with turbochargers (and especially Otto Particulate FIlters) are usually inherently quiet anyway, and many have quite straight-through mufflers -- especially with the valves open. Even so, changing the baffled back box on the stock 60mm FN2 Civic Type R system to the full 60mm Fujitsubo "Power Getter" straight-through system only gains 2hp according to Fujitsubo. Yet in exchange for the meagre 2hp, it's over 13 dB (!!!) louder...
@TassieLorenzoАй бұрын
@@DaveSpecC Typically, a baffled reverse flow muffler only has 30% more pressure drop than a straight-through muffler (so it only costs a handful of hp) in exchange for making the exhaust much, much quieter. So that's a compromise an OEM is usually quite happy to take. Like I said, turbo engines are usually inherently quiet anyway, so things like a Mk5 Golf GTI or Focus RS have a straight-through internal construction of the stock silencer, while cars like the FIAT 500 Abarth could meet (admittedly the older, more lenient) noise rules without any silencers at all.

Them enduras are brill yes very tappy but superb. Actually I was seeing a girls use ago with a Ka with 1.3 and that things was not ticky at all which is very rare for them superb little car and the rust got that aswell. Not great engines as in power and refinement but simple and just work well they can take alot of abuse and still work.

@UPnDOWN2 ай бұрын
Agree the BDA is one of the great 4cyl engines, but that's my point though - the BDA is a Cosworth engine, not a Ford engine. They took a basic Ford block as a starting point, but the development and result is all Cosworth.

And the Coyote engine is an 'OK' V8 engine. Not poor, but not amazing either. Any time a Ford has an engine in it that's one of the party pieces, it's come from someone else. Only time I recall one of their engines being highly regarded was the EcoBoost when it was launched, and well...

Would the big difference for turbo cars work on a diesel? A 1.5dci Renault engine
@UPnDOWNАй бұрын
Yeah, most modern turbo diesels can benefit from a remap.
@NBSV12 ай бұрын
A remap on naturally aspirated engines can be very hit and miss. I’ve seen some that only gain a little bit and aren’t really worth the time. I’ve seen others that gained quite a bit because the factory tune was so far off. Often had to do with timing and how rich the fueling was because most factory stuff is pretty rich. With modern e-throttles and cam timing the factory also sometimes does weird stuff for emissions or other reasons.
