Great stuff! Agreed on the reasons to buy one. They are just amazing to drive, and the quality of the materials is top-drawer. The styling is 70's futurism perfection. It's such a pure design. I grew up with a crush on the Studebaker Avanti but it was just a pretty body on a generic vehicle. The SM, like the DS, was a complete design from the core all the way to the surface. Thanks for taking this on, a project many could only consider doing by winning the Irish Sweepstakes.

@@UPnDOWN Its the short rear wings plus semi trans lucent roof. I can't afford a 19 so a ID is great for a beginner. My swedish friends are well connected Thelin who used to own the leaning Tilting DS19 Owned by the leaning train inventor and sold that to purchase a 56 DS19 his friend Lars I bought the ID its 5th oldest in Sweden. Running just needs the correct rear wings roof and small rear to make wings right. Lars has the parts. Virus and now Brexit have thrown up additional costs. Oh and i have not seen the car in person lool I trust these guys they are good friends. Im an artist and mechanic so I tend to favour the early shape models Love them all but the early form is my favourite. Benn into Citroens from the age of four. No ides as parents were Renault dad Mini and Peugeots. My art teacher owned a 2cv and that cemented my path :) glass artist painter. A la avatar :) an example. Love the SM you remind me of that guy on the secret life of hoovers Rex Garrod :) cool presentation style you have. I can tune out instantly with presenters. I subscribed immediately and when the 59 does Eventually arrive Mr Hubnt is getting to have a run. He has helped me get thur hard time during lock down. Good luck on your channel and projects.

I just started watching this video series and am greatly enjoying it! I'm in the US and fixing a 67 DS which in comparison to this thing now seems like a walk in the park. I have a suspicion that my friend who I got my DS from (who has tons of old cars) may have owned your SM. He sold it to a guy in Michigan and then lost track of it. His was also white, an automatic, black interior, no sun roof and was plated in Ohio. Perhaps you can ask the person you got it from if it came from Michigan? If so it's my buddy's old car.
@UPnDOWN
@UPnDOWN 2 жыл бұрын
I've traced it back mostly to the early 80s, but check out the two history videos I did on it to see if anything rings a bell. Michigan is certainly in the right area, but that said a white automatic with black leather was probably the most common spec SM you'd see in the US!

I know this is not a new video but i just needed to say i REALLY enjoyed it. When i first started fixing cars in the 90s it seemed everyone stick to a certain brand as if it were a football team. I stuck to Fords and in my ignorance didnt like Citroën. As i got older and the world turned to generic and utterly bland SUVs and 4x4 i realised the individuality, beauty and engineering genius of some french cars. I would have that SM in a heartbeat. I wish you Luck!!! ... you're gonna need it. That Maserati V6 has a reputation for being... Challenging. Interestingly, all UK market SM's were LHD, as it was legal. The only conversions to RHD in period were Australian, as LHD cars were illegal for sale or import. Some cars have been converted since, using Australian kits. Not a cheap process, as it involves complete replacement of the assymetric dashboard...

I;m looking forward to follow your journey with the SM. A couple years ago, I spotted a car trailer with both a DS and an SM on it going down the highway through town. Both looked prime for restoration here in Northern California (i.e., not much rust). I wish they'd have been headed for my garage. Long ago I had a Citroen GS, wonderful car. Subscribed for this.

I’ve just begun a similar journey. I hopefully will have my SM in the next couple of weeks so I can start digging into. It’s in a similar state to yours, but it has the engine from a DS.

Enjoyed that - an excellent first effort - I don't follow many vlogs but I'll subscribe to this one especially as it looks like it's going to be a slow burn I'll have something to keep me occasionally occupied when I'm retired

Just been watching ‘the Tomato’ and caught the link to your channel as the SM is one of my all time favourite cars and looking forward to catching up on the rest of your episodes. (No spoilers please!) This takes doing up a car in your spare time to a whole new level! And I’m going yeah! Why wouldn’t you? The challenge is what makes it enjoyable. The SM is out of my price league now and dam you’ve got me thumbing through CX adverts as a real affordable alternative. Keep up the good work. 😀

Thanks Jeff. The CX is a lovely thing, too. I would go as far as to say the earlier S1 cars probably carry about 75% of the style of the SM, anyway. They're just missing a nice engine - they've got the rest.

What a great idea! Loving the SM off course, found your channel because of jack, number 27. There is another great SM restoration going on in Canada, the channel Cold War Motors. From Scott Newstead. He does all the fabricating work himself, on very low budget. Really lokking forward to the progress on this channel. Great stuff!!

Until then, I guess I'll watch your effort. Im sure you will do great! Now take off that wheel, put a new battry in and get the maserati moving!

Rear window: "sugar scoop" tailgate. Much like a Jensen Interceptor or Renault Fuego. Also, the oddness of a 90° V6 being due to it being related to a Maser V8. It's also why the cam covers (and the entire head design) are asymmetric. On the V8, they're symmetric.
@UPnDOWN
@UPnDOWN 3 жыл бұрын
'Sugar scoop' wasn't the term; There's a proper French word for it. Also, the engine isn't actually related to a Maserati V8, that's a bit of a myth. Some of the design traits of it were borrowed from previous designs for conceptual V8s (that may have never actually made production) but the main reason it was 90deg was that all Maserati's tooling and engineering was set up to build engines of that angle; To switch to 60deg, they'd have had to revamp their production line.

It deserves to live. If 007 had been French, this would have been the car. First time I saw one in the flesh, it was the stainless treatment at the rear that struck me. A true one off car and if I managed to match 6 numbers...

Snap, the SM was always in my list of fantasy cars, you’re a brave man and I’ll be plumping for you in your quests to restore that old beauty. French and Italian Engineering, that’ll be trouble free won’t it? I’ve owned a CX when they were current and a BX when they had long been a distant memory and I’ve lusted after the DS since I first saw one as a little ‘un in the 1950s. As soon as Corgi released a banana yellow model with a red roof, my pocket money was saved to get one, it’s still there in my die cast collection. Unfortunately I have never been in a position to own the real thing or any of the others.
