It's such a pure design. I grew up with a crush on the Studebaker Avanti but it was just a pretty body on a generic vehicle. I just started watching this video series and am greatly enjoying it! I'm in the US and fixing a 67 DS which in comparison to this thing now seems like a walk in the park. I have a suspicion that my friend who I got my DS from (who has tons of old cars) may have owned your SM. He sold it to a guy in Michigan and then lost track of it. His was also white, an automatic, black interior, no sun roof and was plated in Ohio. Perhaps you can ask the person you got it from if it came from Michigan? If so it's my buddy's old car.
@UPnDOWN2 жыл бұрын
I've traced it back mostly to the early 80s, but check out the two history videos I did on it to see if anything rings a bell. Michigan is certainly in the right area, but that said a white automatic with black leather was probably the most common spec SM you'd see in the US!

I stuck to Fords and in my ignorance didnt like Citroën. As i got older and the world turned to generic and utterly bland SUVs and 4x4 i realised the individuality, beauty and engineering genius of some french cars. I would have that SM in a heartbeat. I wish you Luck!!! ... you're gonna need it. That Maserati V6 has a reputation for being... Challenging. Interestingly, all UK market SM's were LHD, as it was legal. The only conversions to RHD in period were Australian, as LHD cars were illegal for sale or import. Some cars have been converted since, using Australian kits. Not a cheap process, as it involves complete replacement of the assymetric dashboard...

Rear window: "sugar scoop" tailgate. Much like a Jensen Interceptor or Renault Fuego. Also, the oddness of a 90° V6 being due to it being related to a Maser V8. It's also why the cam covers (and the entire head design) are asymmetric. On the V8, they're symmetric.
@UPnDOWN3 жыл бұрын
'Sugar scoop' wasn't the term; There's a proper French word for it. Also, the engine isn't actually related to a Maserati V8, that's a bit of a myth. Some of the design traits of it were borrowed from previous designs for conceptual V8s (that may have never actually made production) but the main reason it was 90deg was that all Maserati's tooling and engineering was set up to build engines of that angle; To switch to 60deg, they'd have had to revamp their production line.

It deserves to live. If 007 had been French, this would have been the car. First time I saw one in the flesh, it was the stainless treatment at the rear that struck me. A true one off car and if I managed to match 6 numbers...

I've matched no numbers! Although my SM doesn't actually work...

Mate you are a natural,big nuts too! I have also listed after Citroens since my younger years and owned a red BX Gti,Bx Leader E,XM amongst others the Sm is so lickable,I look forward to more vids,good luck.

Yeah....a natural f***in' idiot! (Sorry, love that film!) I wouldn't lick the SM, though; I think you'd catch a disease.

Snap, the SM was always in my list of fantasy cars, you’re a brave man and I’ll be plumping for you in your quests to restore that old beauty. French and Italian Engineering, that’ll be trouble free won’t it? I’ve owned a CX when they were current and a BX when they had long been a distant memory and I’ve lusted after the DS since I first saw one as a little ‘un in the 1950s. As soon as Corgi released a banana yellow model with a red roof, my pocket money was saved to get one, it’s still there in my die cast collection. Unfortunately I have never been in a position to own the real thing or any of the others.

BXs are cheap, you can get your hydro-fix on those!
