No, if you are looking for the upper sum you want to use the endpoint that is going to allow the rectangle to go above the graph. Then the other endpoint will give you the lower sum.

What if the line is symmetrical? Is it neither an upper sum or lower sum?

It is based on where you draw your rectangles. If you draw your rectangles below the graph, it's lower, and if you draw them above, it's upper.

No, you simply use the endpoint that touches the graph when forming your rectangle. When the rectangles are above the graph it's upper sums, and when they are below it's lower sums.
