TIME STAMPS: 2:35 -- The show begins with Talib sharing how much Yasiin has taught him about valuing his worth as an artist and Yasiin is asked how he was able to learn those principles at such an early age. They also discuss Dave Chappelle's words about the potential of art as a powerful commodity, the defining line of art and entertainment, how entertainment and art age differently, the pitfalls of chasing mass appeal, and how real artists want their work to stand the test of time. 7:42 -- Talib brings up Dave Chappelle and they discuss his journey up to 'The Closer.' They talk about how inspirational it's been to witness the recognition that their friend has been receiving when he was never chasing it and how great of an example that sets for others. They also get into Black Star's 'No Fear Of Time' as they explore integrating the sounds of the cosmos throughout the project as well as their decision of how and when it was released and the wise man that said, 'things of quality have no fear of time.' 13:46 -- The origins of how Black Star got its name is discussed. They go on to talk about how important the idea of bringing in the sounds of space was when they were conceptualizing 'No Fear Of Time' and the pushback Yasiin had to give the engineer when he told them that technically there were no sounds in outer space. They discuss the dynamic of how different vibrations can create various states of being as well as Madlib's, 'Sound Ancestors' and the creative videos paired with that project. 18:27 -- Yasiin gives his take on the common expectations of celebrities and how they should behave. They discuss the strange phenomenon that fame can be, as well as Yasiin and Talib staying true to themselves and how that's been a component of their success. Yasiin also gets into his being comfortable with a certain level of public engagement, others who may draw energy from large crowds and Talib talks about his moving away from the rise and grind hustle of times past. 23:05 -- Yasiin's love for fashion is discussed as well as his friendship with Virgil Abloh. They talk about Virgil being a long-time fan of the Black Star movement and his vintage notebook, sporting the group's sticker that he carried around at age 19. Yasiin speaks on witnessing his growth as an artist, the privilege he had of working with Virgil before his untimely passing, and how much he misses him. Yasiin also gets into his own affinity for fashion and the necessity of staying fresh coming up in Brooklyn. 26:17 -- Yasiin and Talib take the opportunity to respond to backlash from some of the so-called fans of Black Star over how they chose to release their most recent album 'No Fear Of Time.' They discuss people's feelings of entitlement over their having free access to music over so many years and fans confusing their art as entertainment. They also get into the offers that were turned down before they eventually landed on a deal with Luminary that also gives listeners full access to their 'Midnight Miracle' series collaboration with Dave Chappelle. 34:53 -- Talib and Yasiin discuss their expecting the true Black Star fans to respect and trust in how they choose to operate as artists and their decision to use Luminary as their platform. They get into the informative journey in terms of people's attitudes that have revealed what they ultimately value and who really rides with Black Star. Yasiin also makes a comparison of the situation to other conceived notions of the past and still wanting their art to reach as many people as possible, but not at any cost. 40:10 -- Yasiin and Talib get into how much they have enjoyed working with the crew at Luminary and appreciating their vision. They also talk about the hypocrisy of so-called fans posting comments about bootlegging their music as many of the same people will complain about how corporations and the government exploit people. They also discuss artists being complicit in the evils of the industry when they fail to take a stand and applauding the efforts of the brave souls that did over generations past. 47:10 -- Yasiin gives a shout out to all the big dreamers and never-quitters of the world. he also has some words for all the haters as well as critics who often seem to miss the point through preconceived expectations when reviewing projects like 'No Fear Of Time.' They discuss how dangerous conforming to any set standard can be, the blatant dishonesty of some album reviews these days, and how it comes down to a critic's authority to comment. In closing Yasiin is asked about his future as an artist who has announced retiring from the industry.

I honestly love listening to Yasiin. His art, humility and knowledge have always made him a source of inspiration for me. I'm really looking forward to new projects coming out of it (like another joint album with Madlib, or saved albums like Mannie Fresh's), "No Fear of Time" is a beautiful event, for me. Thanks for bringing it back and peace to People's Party. Greetings from Argentina. Black Star keep shining!

Trying to convince other people to check out the album, it was because they used to only subscribe to netflix, and now they have that, hulu, disney+, hbo, spotify, espn, amazon prime, and they didn't want yet another subscription service. I appreciated Kweli's comments about the speed of music reviews and the lack of care with the composition of the albums. I find it vexing because reviews no longer really tell me about what the album is doing. What are the nuances that I should look out for as a fan. Too often, I feel the commentary on album reviews are often more about criticisms based on internal preferences than a reflection of what the work does or does not do for a listener. Can we find reviews that slow it down and can help me understand my experience with a piece of art 🎨. Big ups to Black Star for innovating and creating something unique. 👏🏾

Happily like 100. Thank You for keeping it one hundred once again and adding some amendments to the constitution your are building as human beings in a country called Earth. Sounds of the cosmos, I am definitely listening forward to discern them beyond what I can hear, this time.

Mos def is not just a rapper or even a legendary rapper he is an iconic MC, BLACK ON BOTH SIDES is easily one of the greatest underground solo debuts of all times, this man is like a mix of Rakim's incredible pen and Q tip's smooth flow

I think they should just simplify the fact that they are trying to build there own platform and they want the fans help. I love there music. I've bought albums for years and the fact that the money went to universal or whoever is not my fault. its there's as the artist. I take no ownership over there art based on my patronage however I do wish there was a bit more appreciation and accountability on there own moves using companies to market there past work. As a fan that loves there music. I'm waiting for them to spend a few thousand on pressing vinyl independently so I can pay whatever they want for me to buy it. Peace n blessings.

“They want the fans help”. When you go to the Apple Store, are you buying their products to help them? Why should that be different with creatives? If you spent money buying their art in the past, it’s because they created something dope and you wanted a part in it, not because you wanted to help. It’s a condescending thought to think a creator shouldn’t be able to decide what their art is worth and where they should sell it. If you really want it, you’ll get it no matter where it’s at.

@@MrRosanusi and I wasn't saying they need my help to buy there music. I'm referring to what I see them doing with "luminary" vs all the other streaming platforms. Help building that up. I see what mos was saying with the subscription sort of like going to see them live if I wanna hear there music I'll pay for it repeatedly but that logic doesn't personally work for me so I'm not gonna do it.

What a gift this was today, I would like to hear the album, luminary is a new way of listening to music I'm not familiar with I've never used the service before. If it's the only way to heart this album I will have to figure it out. My love and appreciation for Black Star's timeless work, and both artists individually, is beyond words.

For Black star alone, we definitely owe you all, still!! Not just in monetary exchange, but in literal energy. Anyone hearing the album has been changed. We literally owe you all being better, more observant, more enlightened human beings in the world. Not to mention everything else you guys have given us. Even the route you're taking with this new album is a gift, and the conversation around it is something we should hear and take heed to.

I would be willing to support black star if they put this out as a vinyl record that they sell on their site. That way you support the artist directly and you can listen on a format that forces you to actively listen. But at the very least put out a cd since I know vinyl pressing can get expensive.
