AMTK 176 leads eastbound Sunset Limited #2 on Main 1 of UP's Houston Subdivision just north of Downtown Houston, TX. Here, Main 1 crosses over White Oak Bayou, IH 10, and IH 45 (the interstates can be seen off to the left).
The interesting thing about this location is that the Houston Amtrak Station is on Main 2 nearly a half mile geographically south of here (yet the line runs east-west). In order to get to this location, the train backed out of the station about a mile and a half westward to Chaney Jct, where Mains 1 & 2 come back together. It then crossed over to Main 1 and headed east to this location.
The reason this move is necessary is due to UP's directional running pattern between Houston and Beaumont, TX (about 85 miles east of Houston). The train must be on Main 1 to access a connecting track that leads to the eastbound route, UP's Beaumont Subdivision. So the train must back up out of the Houston depot to access Main 1. The westbound Sunset Limited's route into Houston does not have this requirement and as such the train can head straight into the Houston station.
