Due to Hall Effect , clamp meters can measure both ac and dc current.

1. Power stays the same: On the DC side: Power = Voltage × Current = 800 × 12 = 9600 W This same power is sent to the AC side (assuming no losses). 2. Calculate the AC current: On the AC side: Power = Voltage × Current, so: 9600 W = 380 V × Iac Solving for : Iac Iac = 9600/380 = 25.26 A 3. Compare DC and AC currents: DC current = 12 A AC current = 25.26 A The current increases from to 12 A to 25.25 A 4. Calculate the percentage increase: Increase = 25.26 - 12 = 13.26 A Percentage increase = (13.26/12)×100 = 110.5 A Key Point: When converting from high voltage DC to lower voltage AC, the current increases because the power stays the same. In this example, the current increases by about 110.5 Example: Think of this like filling a bucket: With DC, you’re using a high-pressure (800V) but low-flow (12A) water tap. After conversion to AC, the pressure drops (380V), so you need a higher flow (25.26A) to fill the bucket at the same speed.
