The Motion Picture also gave us one huge thing - the reimagined Klingons. Yes, they've changed somewhat over time - but this was the first time they were more then just men in wigs with a little bronzer makeup. The first time we saw them as an intimidating people with the powerful head ridges and metallic uniforms. TMP really was the start of the Star Trek we know today.

Yep. Not the film fans wanted but the film the franchise needed. In 1979, a _Star Trek_ movie could have easily been campy, like _Flash Gordon._ Instead, _TMP_ established the universe the franchise has been playing in for 40 years.

More importantly, it gave us our first example of entitled fans spitting their toys out in frustration over a Klingon redesign... ... Sure, now we see a Klingon with a slightly different head shape or blood that's the wrong shade of pink and we know that there will be fans vowing dismemberment on whoever produced this "travesty" but back in 1979 hating a production just because the klingons looked a bit different to 12 years before... Well, that was new and exciting.

This WAS gorgeous in its day. It WAS truly spectacular on a level your generation cannot comprehend. Not only that, prior to this motion picture, all fans ever had of STAR TREK was the low budget TV show. Seeing STAR TREK alive in grand scale on the silver screen with state of the art sight and sound was EPIC in its day.

I saw this when I was 5. I'd been watching reruns of TOS regularly for a year. My little mind was blown by the beauty of the movie and the score. I didn't find it dull at all, so engrossed was I in the spectacle and wondering what would come next. I still try to approach the movie with that same sense of wonder and appreciation of the artistry involved. This was the thing that really galvanized my love of Trek, which endures and deepens to this day.

When Kirk was looking at the Enterprise from the front and you can see his expression, they added a reflection like you were still looking at him from outside the shuttle and you can see the Enterprise in that reflection. Loved that.

The Klingon theme at the beginning, when the 'Amar' and two other Klingon cruisers encounter V'ger, brought me out in goosebumps in the cinema in 1979, and has done so on every time I've heard it since. Thinking about it now, has brought me out in goosebumps. The soundtrack is that damn powerful.

Jerry Goldsmith’s “Enterprise” theme is simply Beautiful as it played during the inspection of the refitted Enterprise by Adm. Kirk & Cmdr. Scott. Odds are today’s movies would never allow such a detailed scene to be added.

One of the things I really liked is that they addressed one of the complaints about the movie... that three Klingon cruisers approached V'Ger, but we only saw two getting destroyed. In this new version, they show the first one getting destroyed in a graphic on the monitor of Epsilon Nine just as the station commander and the sensor officer are discussing the situation.

I can't tell you how happy I am you're doing this for the movies. I grew up on TNG, and this was my first intro to TOS. My dad picked it up from Blockbuster. I didn't even realize what it was at first. When they took the shuttle pod to drydock, I asked my dad where they were going. He said "to a ship you know." While it looked different from the D, I immediately recognized it as the Enterprise. I absolute fell in love with the design. It was so sleek and fit compared to the stretched out Galaxy class. To this day the refitted constitution is tied with the Excelsior for favorite design.

I was at the Fathom Events screening back in May, and every up and down you pointed out I totally agree with. There’s one up that I loved and it’s at the end of the movie. Toward the closing of the end credits, there’s a short dedication that says “For Bob”. The team behind this restoration worked with Robert Wise in 2001 for the original release of the Director’s Edition, and in the years that followed he sadly passed away. When they had the chance to do this 4K restoration, they did it to honor Robert Wise for what he did for Star Trek: The Motion Picture. I will make sure to get this with the box set coming out next week.

This movie is, in my mind, pure Trek. It is the exploration of space, the exploration of the human condition, the exploration of the best of what we humans can be, the seeking out of new life and the unknown. It’s something I’ve missed from more recent iterations of Star Trek (and thankfully, so far, they’re bringing that back with SNW). I want to see more of this going forward. Yes, the diversity is great and it’s fantastic that we’re finally seeing recent Trek series be a bit bolder than they have been in the past. But diversity without working together in common cause, aka diversity with “grittiness” undermines what Trek is supposed to be. You take this, throw in what has been done with recently with diversity, and it is everything Trek was ever meant to be. In my view, this movie was way underrated. And we need more like it. Not everything has to be flash bang boom. And I think we’ve been getting so much of it lately (I’m looking at you and your lens flares JJ) that it’s getting nauseating.

I saw it on the big screen Sunday afternoon (May 22nd) in Dallas, TX. It is one of my most favorite ST movies! The music, in the overture and beyond, literally brought tears to my eyes! This movie explores the great beyond of the galaxy as well as facing the existential questions of “Is this all that I am; is there nothing more?” This movie addresses the heart of the mission of the Enterprise: to seek new life forms and new civilizations, and to boldly go where no one has gone before!

I live in a movie industry town. We all forget they are simply entertainment and jobs for folks. Each job has its own set of stories and issues. Years ago I grew tired of listening to the endless word of alcoholic, druggie, narcissistic, or cruel actors and crew. I just want the untainted movie fantasy entertainment. It is great that new technology can rescue older movies.

Can't wait to see it. I think the one credit you and so many others miss with this film, is that it, successfully, took a 4:3 tv show that we all loved, and by golly did it bring it to the big screen in an unbelievably gorgeous aspect ratio . Even in its original configuration, unfinished, it was grand, it was massive, it was awe-inspiring. Fast forward to 2022, I'm just sort of sick of the car chase...... I want to sit down and have my senses wowed, at a speed my eyes can process. Half the films I see today, I basically just have to close my eyes, or other wise look away. I'm watching a computer came (mostly recently the latest batman film comes to mind). Everyone tells me, "well, you got to have an exciting chase where you catch the guy and get the information you need. Really? Do you? Never seen that before? Naw, this film stands apart from the rest of the trek films and for that reason, it is my favourite. (Not to say I don't enjoy every bit of trek in addition) Just wondering, what do you think the adjusted budget would be on Star Trek The Motion picture in total to get us to the 2022 4k release? Anyway, love your channel!

I've watched ST:TMP many times over the decades, in its various versions, and when the director's cut landed on DVD, I thought "there, they've fixed it". The new 4K version goes way beyond fixing things to making the best version of the film possible. Beyond the obvious and welcome clean-up of the soundtrack and the improvements in the visual effects, there are many subtle ambiance improvements that make the Enterprise feel truly alive, as a ship with ~500 crew members should be. By far, most movies get released, and whatever flaws they have remain untouched from then on. As Trek fans, we are incredibly lucky that the powers that be recognize the legacy of ST:TMP and made the investment to fully realize the film after all this time.

Love _TMP._ It's grand opera & gothic, psychological horror for grown ups in the grounded sci-fi of _2001_ and mood of _Vertigo_ (Goldsmith even nods to Bernard Herrmann's score). And it's what starship exploration would be like in reality: everything goes wrong, accidents happen, people get killed, egos are shattered, & you'd spend most of your time staring into the black, completely powerless but looking for meaning & connection to the unknowable - the film's point.

I agree that the 2022 "Star Trek:The Motion Picture" is gorgeous, both visually and aurally. And Sean, I'm so glad you brought up "2001: A Space Odyssey." Paramount may have wanted another "Star Wars," but I also noticed, especially in this 2022 version, they got something much closer to "2001" instead. As you mentioned, this is obvious in the stateliness with which both films regard their ships and the trip of the Enterprise into the V'Ger cloud mirroring the stargate "2001" sequence. I would also add Spock traveling toward V'Ger in a red space suit that looks remarkably like Bowman's and the evolution of Ilia and Decker into a new life form being quite reminiscent of Bowman's evolution into the Star Child. (And whatever happened to the Ilia/Decker lifeform(s) anyway? Another unanswered ST mystery!) While "ST:TMP" may not be as profound as "2001," it's also not nearly as pretentious. And now it's more beautiful than ever. Thank you for this video.

Very good comment! I would like, however, to bring up that Ilia (who had been absorbed into V'Ger and returned to the Enterprise as a probe "to study the carbon units infesting Enterprise") and Decker were both merging with V'Ger, if I remember right. This would create a tripartite entity (dare I say a trinity) whose desires and motivations we could barely even guess at.

This was a big time for space films, 2001, The Black Hole, Star Wars, even James Bond changed things up to get Moonraker in there due to the genre. Every studio wanted a piece. TMP may have been a rushed film with lots of pacing issues, however at least it helped revive Star Trek and bring it to the big screen. At least the higher ups saw enough potential to continue with the future(better) installments.

Thank you so much for doing this video, Seán. Although I watched it on Paramount+ when it debuted, I saw it last night in a local theater. First time in 43 years on the BIG screen, with big theater sound. Not every home stereo system is worthy of this beautiful soundtrack. It made me feel a little old to have seen it during the original run, but I am fortunate to have been just old enough to see a couple of the TOS episodes during the initial broadcast run. To me, this is Goldsmith's finest work, and still my favorite movie soundtrack of all time. So, I get home from the theater last night, turn on the TV to see what's new, and here's your marvelous video, celebrating this beloved movie. It was perfect timing and I agree with all of your points. I love the new effects, but I must admit this new version looked better on my 4k TV than it did at the theater. Likely due to the projection equipment? Just a guess. As it happens, I actually noticed the POD you mentioned docked at the station when I was at the theater! Nice little addition! But overall, you can really see the love these artists put into this remaster. Anyway, 5 dilithium crystals for you, sir! Pacing be damned. This is a movie intended to be thoughtful, cerebral, character driven. Yes, I love Star Wars too, but this film stands alone in the Star Trek universe as everything Star Wars is NOT. Live long, and prosper!

You are so right that this film deserves a BIG screen and exquisite sound system (speakers larger than your children, etc.). It so happened that earlier this month I tested out a new 1080P front projector on a 150" outdoor screen, and when I selected what to show, it was this Director's Cut. The terrible barely audible sound from that projector was a big "down," for me, but I fortunately have the aforementioned child-sized front speakers with a 7.1 system indoors and a 64" screen, so not all is lost. I had the famous Andrew Probert cut-away poster back in the early 80's, and built the Refit Enterprise AMT model in the late 80's.

Perhaps the film's slow pacing is meant to represent the "real" time Enterprise takes crossing space getting to V'Ger, and also the "real" time she takes crossing over/through V'Ger once getting there🤔 I agree, it's visually stunning😎

I've tried watching this movie 3 times before seeing it this week in a movie theatre. On a small tv or iPad... I fall asleep... but as a theatrical experience... it's my new favorite Star Trek movie! They played a trailer before advertising a September run for Wrath of Kahn. That time window for a Retro Ups and Downs would be nice

I still have to watch this version, for its time it was amazing in terms of visuals and the music but my favorite for for music and the story is Star Trek First Contact. Watching and listening to that on a home theater setup is amazing.

I love TMP for all the reasons many people don't - all those endless exterior shots of star ships flying around, leaving space dock and just doing space shippy things.... love it. Can't wait to get a chance to watch this 4k version.

I'm definitely looking forward to watching this 4K version when Paramount+ releases over here in the U.K. next month. I remember how much better the Director's Edition was in 2001 and it's about time it was remastered like this. I'm lucky enough to have a 4K TV and 5.1 home cinema sound system in my bedroom, so totally get what you mean about how much of a difference it makes to have a good enough sound system. I totally agree that the score is one of the highlights and one of the best of all the movies (although First Contact will always be my favourite!). Finally, I'd love to see more Retro Reviews and Ups & Downs of other movies and/or TV episodes.

I’ll look forward to seeing this! I remember seeing a weird cut of this on tv. It looked, sounded and felt more like a TV movie production. The oddest thing was in the wormhole scene there were no audio or visual effects on the bridge scene at all! Does anyone else remember seeing that cut?

Sean! Correction. Craig Huxley created the Blaster Beam, not Jerry Goldsmith. Craig Huxley also starred in two episodes of TOS: as Peter Kirk in “Operation: Annihilate” and as Tommy Starnes in “And The Children Shall Lead”. Just a heads up.

All the love to Jerry Goldsmith but I almost spit out my drink when he said that. The Beam was also used in The Black Hole just a week later in 1979! Oh, Huxley also composed the music for the Genesis demo in The Wrath of Khan.

If it hasn't already been mentioned, what about the moment you actually get to see the Enterprise turn around to face the front of the V'ger vessel after the flyover? It might be a such a small detail, but I flipped out when it was finally shown. That one small issue used to drive me CRAZY because I refused to believe the view screen was simply at a reverse angle.

If I remember correctly, Sulu does day viewer ahead, then the balls come up, then the cloud. They clear the cloud, and do a 180. there was no order to make a turn. They're looking where they just left, but we're shown the aperture- it still doesn't make any sense to me. In the DVD Director's cut we believe there's more to V'ger, and they just keep going.
@Revan2908

I liked that because it also showed that the aperture they got pulled into was located on the front of the ship. It always confused me because the section where the big white "fountain" of light comes up is nearer to the _back_ of the ship.

I love this update! Yes Sean, the score is amazing! Added visuals are amazing! My down would be.... Why didn't they clean up the mat lines in the Klingon scenes! Missed opportunity to update that entire scene to get it away from the clunky, perfectly aligned, black edged sequence. (IMHO)

I saw the 2022 Remastered edition in a theater. It took me back to when I saw ST:TMP in 1979 with my father. I recalled the scenes that have stayed with me all these years: 1) Klingons v V'Ger, 2) reveal of the refit USS Enterprise. The visuals were improved, much closer to 2022 standards. The original motion control shots of the models retain their original brilliance. Whether rotating over the K't'inga class battlecruiser in the opening, Kirk ogling the USS Enterprise, or the interior shots of V'Ger to give us a sense of scale. The sound was fantastic. Being able to hear the various instruments in the orchestra distinctly was delightful. There are indeed many reasons why Jerry Goldsmith's music still embodies Star Trek for many of us. Worth it.

You know, I have been a Star Trek fan since I was 8. I am now 61. I watched The Motion Picture on opening day and was disappointed, but as I look back I realize that I was disappointed because as teen I didn’t understand the or appreciate the concept of the story. Of course, like most Trek fans, when WOK came out I was like: "Now, THAT’S Star Trek," and it was my favorite of the films for decades. However, about 10 years ago something happened. I decided to go back and watch it again, because I had watched all of the others millions of times. I figured it was time to rewatch the first one, so I bought and watched the 2001 director's addition. I had the big screen TV, and surround sound, and I cannot tell you what an incredible experience it was going back and rewatching that thing. The absolute power of the story, and its concepts, just gripped me!!! The wonder of travelling through the cloud over V'ger!!! It blew me away!!! It was deep!!! Not the frivolous entertainment that the films ended up becoming, but a serious sci-fi epic. I suddenly realized that ST:TMP was the closest representation of Gene Roddenbury's vision!!! I have now watched it over and over and regularly pull it out. It has become my favorite of the films. I have to admit, i haven’t watched the 2022 4K version because I think one of the things that is so powerful in the film is the mystery of v'ger. The fact that you never see the entire craft is part of the wonder of the film. The idea that we see the whole thing in the 4K version kind of turned me off. That said, I am sure that at some point I will give in and watch it. Epic film, and ahead of its time by light years!!!

ST TMP IS the most Star Trek ever put to film! (Meaning that it's closer to the TOS then anything that followed, before the formula was change to emulate TWoK) Which is fine, I thoroughly enjoy this film and it's nice to see them explore strange new worlds and civilizations 😉

Remastered/Director’s Cut/Original- I loved Star Trek: The Motion Picture when it first came out in 1979. One just has to be patient. And reading the novelization by Gene Roddenberry enhances the appreciation of the movie even more.

I really loved the added cgi to the V’ger walkway, V’ger’s exterior itself, and all the cleaned up backgrounds and color gradients. This finally made this film enjoyable for what it’s supposed to be. And Sean, it’s not fair to nitpick how dull the film is. It’s a slow story, no kind of remaster will change that

A great retro Ups & Downs! I agree with much of what you said Sean. The Motion Picture is visually stunning, and I can't imagine how much so it will be in 4k! The new Enterprise model is my favorite, and one of my favorite Star Trek Ships period! The soundtrack is an auditory transformative experience! It ranks with the music from The Wrath of Khan, The Voyage Home, The Undiscovered County, and First Contact!! I have more tracks from The Motion Picture, Generations, and First Contact on my favorites playlist than any other Star Trek property. I also had the Director's cut soundtrack from the early 2000's, that also came along with the amazing Inside Star Trek CD. As you said it's not traditionally exciting as most big budget blockbuster movies are, but I have always like The Motion Picture, and feel it has a bad reputation, and that reputation is unjustified. Yes it's slow paced, and not action packed, but I really like the story, plot, and character development throughout. Spock ,Kirk, and Decker are different at the end scene with V'Ger than they were at the beginning, and I love that in a movie! No it's not Star Wars, or exactly 2001, two other classic SciFi movies franchises I love, but The Motion Picture doesn't deserve the hate it's gotten over the years. I'm really excited now that I know there are more additions from the previous Director's Cut, other than just remastering it up to 4k. I look forward to streaming it soon!! I'd love to see more retro Ups & Downs of all the movies, and classic/beloved/iconic episodes off all the series from the Original Series through Enterprise!
