UPSC concept explained - How did the word "HINDU" Originate?

The word Hindu originates from the Sanskrit word Sindhu, which refers to the Indus River.
Old Persian term for the people who lived beyond the river Indus (Sanskrit: Sindhu).
The term "Hindu" was used by outsiders, such as the Persians and Greeks, to refer to the people living in the land beyond the Indus River. It was not until the 16th century CE that the term began to be used by the people of the Indian subcontinent themselves to distinguish themselves from Muslims.
