First you should have vacancy in Tamilnadu cadre for your Caste in the year you appear. But you will know about the vacancy only after you have passed the interview. So there is no particular rank, if you have vacancy in your caste and no one in tamilnadu in your caste opted for IPS as first prefrence you will get Tamilnadu cadre even if your rank is 600 or 700. But if there is no vacancy for your caste in Tamilnadu cadre , then even if you get Rank 1 , you will not get Tamilnadu cadre. Getting rank might be on your hardwork , but getting home cadre is mostly based on luck.

It depends on the vacancies in the particular year for the particular state. Sometimes, even 1st rank holder may NOT get home cadre. Sometimes, even 150th ranker may get home cadre. Chances of home cadre are bright for people within 50 ranks Dont worry about this now. If you Study and practice well, you will automatically come within first 100 ranks.

There is NO fixed scheme for study and break. You can keep it flexible as per your convenience. Breaks are definitely needed to refresh your mind. But ensure that breaks don't exceed a certain limit. If you study for 8 hours a day(actual study time), you can have 3 breaks totaling around 1 hour to 1 hr 15 mins

Revise ncert books and standard reference books like (spectrum, ramesh singh, laxmikant etc,) multiple times and be thorough with foundation. Try solving and analysing with answer keys and find the weak areas and revise multiple times... Best of luck👍

If you have lot of attempts and time, try self preparation. But you might waste lot of time to gather the portions. If you go to academy, they will teach you what to study and what not to ! So its your own preference.

Its upto you to decide. Exam can be cleared with self preparation - but you will have to take some model tests for feedback. If you choose academy, there are some advantages- you will get continuous guidance, feedback and stay in a competitive environment.
