I still remembering accidentally stumbling across Stella Street on BBC2 while I was channel hopping late one night in the late '90s, I had no idea what I was watching (Len was trying to start a fire outside Roger Moore's house). Within a few minutes it was over. What the eff was this? I checked the TV guide and saw it was on the next night, and every night that week. It was so surreal it was intriguing, so I made sure to watch it the next night (and set the video). I became obsessed with it - 10 minute long episodes, completely DIY and done on a shoestring budget (and deliberately made to look that way) and, unusual for the time, no canned laughter - I'd never seen anything like it. Totally unique and I loved the punk ethos of it all. It quickly became my favourite comedy series.

It was directed by Peter Richardson who did The Comic Strip episodes and the show was commissioned by the BBC, so it's a bit of a stretch to say it's "DIY". But it is great all the same.

@@Couchtripper true, and Phil Cornwell and John Sessions had already both done a fair amount of TV work (including both of them Spitting Image), but certainly the idea and feel of Stella Street was very DIY. Well, particularly the first 3 series anyway - the DIY feel and low budget aesthetic was there. After that, it did go quite downhill. The 4th series and the film were more polished with a bigger budget, but very disappointing in my opinion. But those first 3 series (the 2nd in particular) - absolutely classic!
