Never played ridge racer 4 as a kid. Downloaded it because of the cool cover art. Didn't play it for a while. FInally tried it for the first time last night. Never even played ANY ridge racer game. I will say R4 has what so many racers today lack, a unique personality. Closest thing today might be Forza Horizon series, with a "hipster" feel, or need for speed's punk rock feel. Both of those are played out. The sort of funk disco feel with the music is just amazing. And the driving actually feels, for a d pad, really nice! Great game to play, and can't blame my enjoyment on nostalgia.

I originally played the games in the arcades (I'm 42) and I remember the first game being very futuristic feeling because it was the first game to feature first person only view (sitting in a full car seat setup no less) and I owned it on PS1 too. I preferred Rage Racer which was the next title but when RR4 came along that was it, I LOVED this game - the intro+music are still a huge love of mine and it's a shame Namco didn't do more with the Reiko main character although she did show up briefly in future titles I think! This was the pinnacle of the Ridge Racer series though and I'm glad you enjoyed it all these years later!

A very late reminder that in FH4, there's a side story wich a female character kind of influencer tells about racing games, and one is of course Ridge Racer, and the car used was a Honda NSX 1995 with Rocket Bunny body kit

Even the 7th series on PS3 can't capture the "original feels" The menu screen, the black yellow aesthetic, the beats, the musics, that was on ps one / psx era with all the limitations. Wonder why the more we advanced the more we fall?

The more games that are developed... The harder it gets to generate unique ideas. R4 was exceptional considering the technology available by that time, good gameplay, great soundtrack, a lot of attention to detail everywhere and a great intro with a charming character... Reiko even became popular in Japan appearing on TV commercials

@@PSNMM2M well, there’s still a ton of gems in modern gaming, it’s just that not many AAA studios aren’t willing to take the risks associated with trying new concepts. If they keep pumping out what they know works, they don’t have to worry about changing things and having people be mad or having something different completely flop.

There's artifacts, but you're not going to get a perfect clean upscale, this looks really good. The scenes with Reiko and her close ups smooth a lot really well, so do a lot of the car scenes, there are some which are too busy which artifact more and the zoomed out shot of her walking is the most difficult to clean up. Overall.. with what you had to work with, an easy 9/10 or so.

I'm so glad you decided to upscale this intro, it's by far one of my faves from the 90s, that and FFVIII. I noticed that your most recent videos are upscaled to 8k, do you think if you went back to this video you could do a better job of it or is this the best it gets because of the source material? It's a shame the song skips slightly in the first run through at approx 0:40 seconds in :( Amazing work though, I only just found your channel today after my jaw dropped with the job you did with Thundercats and Ulysees 31! That intro looked jaw-dropping back in the day yet this steps it up!! Looks great! Submitting NTSC-U/C votes for additional intro.s and/or demo footage, maybe alongside gameplay: 🔴 _Omega Boost_ (with Loudmouth's music in the intro./FMV and Static-X's menu music) 👍 🔴 _Alone In The Dark: The New Nightmare_ 🔴 _Covert Ops: Nuclear Dawn_ or one of the _Fear Effect_ titles 🔴 one of the _Colony Wars_ titles 🔴 _007: The World Is Not Enough_ / one of the _Medal of Honor_ titles / one of the _Alien_ tiles or other choice FPS 🔴 🧐🤔 though the second _G-Police_ has better graphics in the intro and in-game, _more notable_ is that the 1st one is the only experience I've seen on the PS1 that had a video settings menu which had 3 slider adjustments for *the view/draw distance, view angle and frame rate* ...All three were tied together - _auto-compromising_ with the other settings. Would be interesting to not only see it upscaled, etc. like the splendid R4 here but also somehow cracked open to max out all three of its video settings simultaneously.

The pre-fitness, minimalist movement - less body shaming and aesthetics. Analog life, supplemented by static digital assets. not too tight knit, but relatively present community, not showing everything to people we don't know online. No wars in G20, a peaceful protected by Pax Americana and the lack of Soviet Union or China. Now that I'm 30? I feel grateful I grew up then We didn't have the exquisite sense the information age gave us? But life was a lot more free.

I find it funny that your sense of security or peace is contingent on the dissolution of the Soviet Union and China being poorer/less strong than it is today. I understand your nostalgia for y2k Japan but that line is just offputting for me as someone from China. Lmao like you just can't reminisce a by-gone era without someone else living in comparably worse conditions.
@JS-te2vjКүн бұрын
@ sorry if it hurts your feelings dude. I can reminisce without China or Soviet Union sure, you were never part of our western way of life. China could be rich or poor, I don't mind. But those were times when relations were stable, 周恩来/鄧小平 and Japan worked hand in hand to cooperate, mind each other's own business. Until Clinton came to power, started engaging, China joins the WTO, starts stealing tech, buying Japanese land (while prohibiting Japan to buy theirs) starts a new "Japan hatred education" to deviate home grievances, this is when things started becoming less peaceful.
@the_illuminati_thugga3810Күн бұрын
@@JS-te2vj It has never been that peaceful let's be very honest. Remember the 1940s? Also I don't even disagree with you on whatever criticisms or disgruntlments you have for us. I just find it annoying that someone like me always have to be made into a racialized "other" or the "bad people" just so you guys can reinforce the so-called western identity.
@JS-te2vjКүн бұрын
@@the_illuminati_thugga3810 While I admit Japan was pretty damn viscious in the 1940s, do YOU remeber the 1940s? Even my Grandparents were 5〜6 year olds then. Tell me about your experience. I never said you were the "bad" guys. This is all subjective to circumstance, and there is no monopoly in right or wrong. But that doesn't change the fact that we both minded our own business and were fine with our own ways of life. It may be off-putting, sure, but I'm sorry that's the reality. We don't want you to be weak or poor. We want you to leave us alone, and stop funneling your hatred towards the outer world
@JS-te2vjКүн бұрын
@@the_illuminati_thugga3810 Terribly sorry to throw your boomerang back at you, but China's sense of security and pride is contingent on hating, ursurping "the west, and hating on Japan". Your national identity is based on "the century of shame" - hatred of others. We were NEVER school educated to hate another country growing up. NEVER. Our national identity has nothing to do with China or Soviets being poor. We prided ourselves in article 9, relinquishing all methods of war. We did our own thing, we're left alone in peace. That gap of peace is what allowed Y2k Japan to be what it was. If it's off-putting, you're gonna have to find a way to internalise and deal with it
