For UPSC, yeah you can rely on Romila Thapar and Guha. But for the sake of information, these two are extremely biased and don’t even consider their books for using as toilet papers…

@@IASStudy-xu2ye Romila thapar, tharoor and Ramchandra Guha provide extremely biased views. Romia was even taken to court for this. Their views are propaganda unfortunately. If you read them make it a point to know other side of story too, because half knowledge is poisonous

for history their is one more awesome book - From Pallasey to Partition....reading it will fulfil all requirements for modern history for all competitive examinations

For environment I would suggest "marginlands: India's environment on the brink" by aarati kumar Rao. It is environmental storytelling. Something new and different

Also kindly suggest some books apart from the upsc syllabus like motivational book, biography/autobiography, and books like “Sapiens” By Yuval Noah and “48 Laws of Power” by Robert Greene. Also give us the review of the book after reading. And tell us about the takeaways from that book. Thank you

Adding a bit more to it, aspirants can try and read some historical fictions like- Train to Pakistan by Khushwant Singh Passage to India by E M Foster Sunlight on the Broken column by Attia Hossien The last Queen by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni

Read these books and increase your number of attempts. Add some more adventure to your life. Or read and analyze some good toppers copies and increase your chance to make it in fewer attempts. But then life will be a lot less adventurous.

Rajiv Sikri's book is not just dated but also reads like a Wikipedia entry. A better book for beginners would he Shivshankar Menon's "Choices".

Imo it's better to read something that goes against (or sort of against) your ideology. This way you'll constantly counter the points given in the book + it might also change your perspective on a few points. Either way it's a win for you.

I've not read it, but so far as I know it's more a policy implementation critique than an environment book.

@@UPSCprepIAS it will present the picture of rural in india facing distress in a way that has not been done so far...besides reading it will make one understand why government policies fail to deliver at grass root levels...or dont achieve their objectives....it makes one see real india in an unimaginable way
