This driving lesson explains and demonstrates why it can be advantageous to blip the throttle pedal when changing up gears. I drive three cars and explain the differences between the three. In one of the cars the upshift blip does not provide an advantage.

Don't think this would fix things for you. If you find the revs are dropping too low, the simplest solution is just to change gears quicker. When you're going first to second, there's often a large rev drop to do ~2k if you've waited until 20mph after pulling out of a junction. You're probably finding the car lurches forwards as you wait for the engine to slow down to match speeds

That's a great tip! On my car I don't need to use this method on upshifts because the RPMs fall slow enough that I can upshift smoothly just by timing when I let the clutch out so it engages right as the RPM drops to where it needs to be in the next gear like your diesel Fiat. Took a bit of practice but the feeling of getting the rev match perfect and feeling nothing when the clutch engages is so satisfying. I can definitely see how this method could be quite useful on cars where the RPM drops quickly

Minor point, but I noticed how the camera for the pedals on the Vauxhall was more to the side than on the Seat, which was from above (presumably due to the interiors of each car). Even though pedal cams are usually from above, I actually find this side view better as I can see more clearly whether and by how much you are pressing down each pedal.

Great video. Really helpful. Some friends, ask me, why I revmaching when downshifting or sometimes when upshifting if I not need for , because I not in a racetrack on I need keep my revs up. My answer it's always: do you feel the car Jerking or the downshifting when I do that? - no, it's really smooth as if you don't change gears. Exactly, that is the purpose. Also, more life for the gearbox and the clutch.

It's kinda hard for me to explain but I've been driving manual for so long that my body aka feet an hands just do their own thing to the sound of the engine. I had a car when I was younger that the tach didn't work so I just taught myself to listen to and feel the car. My two cents, learn to rev-match when downshifting, it will help save the life of your clutch and trans. This was a fantastic video that alot of people can learn from.

@@ramind10001 That doesn't make any sense. That's like saying cars where you start the engine with a button is not a real starter like the ones from 1930 where you had to manual crank the engine to start the car. Rowing through many gears in a manual transmission is primitive and useless. You don't get better performance or better fuel economy. You don't even get better driving skills since an automatic driver will have more time with both hands on the steering wheel and will not have to worry about gears when pulling emergency maneuvers, while a manual driver will be susceptible to this. And yes, I actually do drive manual transmission cars, even have a license and tested with a manual transmission truck with a trailer. Manual transmissions are ancient junk.

in my manual 125i, even if the revs are in the right place (or above for where 2nd gear should be), it’s always a bit jerky unless you stay on the bite point for eons. first to second is much smoother if i keep on the throttle just a little bit just before i raise the clutch to engage second gear and keep it there (or add a bit more) until the clutch is fully out. i don’t blip like in this video because i tend to rev it out more and i know even if my revs are correct it’s not super smooth without any throttle. this changes if i’m going downhill though - i don’t have to use any throttle to make the first to second shift smooth

I got my first manual car, a 2021 GTI, and struggled making shifts smooth. The 1 to 2 shift sucked the most and even clunked the lower mount when it jerked, no matter how slow I release the clutch. One time I shifted while I accidentally had my foot on the throttle just a little bit. The shifts were way smoother. That really helped me, but for some reason I still have a hard time doing it perfectly consistently. I'm starting to mess with little things now like adding lower engine mount insert, and may even look at shifter cable bushings to make shifts feel crisper. The insert may cause a little more cabin vibration so that's why I didn't get a billet one.

Great video, I find it very hard to match the revs in the mornings when I drive to work, seems like the RPMS always drop so fast when I upshift even all the way up to 5th gear which makes it hard to match revs when upshifting and especially from 1st to 2nd I will try out this method in the morning. When I come home in the afternoons the RPMS drop a lot slower and I can match the revs easier. 9:17 is the level I want to be at when I upshift, how the way I upshift is I let the clutch engage first before I add any gas. I want to start adding gas to my upshifts since it sounds so much better and faster but I want to avoid burning my clutch up when I give gas before the bite point. 14:34 This is exactly how my car is, you give a little gas and the RPMs start jumping to 2000 or over + a stage 1 exedy clutch made it very hard to learn on as a beginner. I have gotten better on keeping the RPMS below 2000 starting off in first gear, I rev it up over 2000 RPMs from time to time which makes me cringe but getting used to it.

I have one of those cars with a sensitive gas pedal like the lady you mentioned at the end of the video. I find it impossible to drive without over-reving , which is I believe going to damage the clutch long term. I even got an experienced professional driving instructor (an old, seasoned guy) to help me and when he took over the car, he actually couldn’t get to it to move as well (stalled it several times in a row!). I’m at a loss on what to do, keep at it and damage the car long term, or just sell and try to get something not so sensitive....

These are my current methods. Why they need to be performed are either the Engine characteristics cause the Revs to drop below the right rev range for the next gear, or you took too long to complete the shift such as when you get caught in the shifter gate and your timing is now off. If I am at Lower to Medium Revs (revs don't drop as much compared to when you are at high revs; where 1st to 2nd gear might have 2000 RPM drop when at high revs), - just release the clutch to the bite point and add a gentle amount of gas (6:36) I find this much more consistent and reliable than upshift throttle blip. If I am at higher revs, and say the revs dropped to idle for reasons mentioned above (messed up shifting, got caught in the shift gate, etc. ) -Either double tap the gas , or do one big throttle tap to get the revs up, -wait for the revs to drop, - then peel off the clutch at medium speed before adding gas (watch video; changing up gears quickly and smoothly by dropping the clutch).

I tried to release the clutch at the same time to prevent revs shooting up as you mentioned, but still no luck. Any other suggestions ?

For me, something like this is only necessary in 2nd-3rd: 1st-2nd you can just shift quickly and catch the next gear when the revs match on their own 2nd-3rd takes a little longer if you wait for the gearstick to move itself back to centre That said, modern cars with electronic throttles have a lot of lag for emissions reasons (they'll actually smooth your inputs intentionally) so this is really unnecessary with that throttle hang. The issue you run across is having to wait for the revs to drop

All cars are different so it does vary. When cold it takes an age to enter any gear in my MX5 and that's a brand new car. Good once warm though.

Hey Richard, I’m driving Mazda2.. lol Just 2 questions: 1- in the end you mentioned about the issue for new cars like mazda2, did you mean for changing to up gears? So clutch down, choose a gear, then let clutch up a bit then add some gas? To avoid the rev flying? 2-the other video of yours for rev matching for downshifting, advised to finish the tapping same-time finishing gear choosing- then let clutch up; however I saw another video “advance driving school” shows they do the tapping after putting gear stick to the lower gear, then let clutch up. Feels like that is easier to do, but I trust you more, what’s ur thoughts on this? - sure Mazda 2 can do the rev matching in your way? (Considering the flying rev issue) Thanks a lot

It does depend on your car. In my Leon rev before changing gears is easier but in some cars where the revs drop quickly revving after changing gear is easier. The goal is to have the revs where they need to be before the clutch comes up. For rev matching up a gear you also want the revs before the clutch comes up.

I was going to ask why you'd have a flywheel so light that you can't just lazily shift gears up without using gas.. But then you answered that question at 9:12

In some cars, such as my Opel / Vauxhall Insignia, when I go up the gears, when I press the clutch the engine rpm does not go immediately to no load (850 rpm), but the car holds it for about 2 seconds at the expected rpm of the higher gear, making the up-shifts smooth without effort. Because it is a big diesel with big flywheel, the engine is a bit slow to rev down once the clutch is pressed, so changing gears quickly when reving the engine high is kinda unavoidably jerky, cause the rpm is still too high for the next gear.

Some cars do have auto rev matching. Many Mazda models have this for up shifts.

I think a great way of letting out the clutch is to think of it as peeling your foot off the clutch like when you peel a stamp off of an envelope.

I do a different method for this purpose which is by any means worse on the clutch but easier to do. I ride the throttle a bit longer so when I step on the clutch it slips and the engine revs up allowing me more time until the revs drop too low. What is your opinion about this? Would this kill the clutch in long terms?

That's great, but my car has a rev hang, so only way to perfectly switch a gear up is to do it slowly (not releasing clutch slow, but changing and releasing when revs go down to match gear speed), or to release the clutch slowly if you want to switch gear faster which is not good for clutch...

You only need to press the clutch when slowing down when your engine speed gets to around 1000rpm.

I remember that's also how my dad taught me to drive a manual when I was a kid. But yeah, try your best to only step on the clutch when slowing down as close as you can get to a standstill without stalling. Avoid coasting in neutral or with the clutch pressed in. Just practice a lot and you'll find your own rhythm in driving.

Great videos and helpful for anyone. Would throttle blip upshift while clutch down cause more wear. Say I'm trying to change from 2nd to 3rd gear say 4k rpm and revs drop to around 2k rpms is it better to not rev or at 4k rpms with clutch down rev abit
@ConquerDriving
@ConquerDriving 2 жыл бұрын
When up shifting you rarely need to blip the throttle unless the revs drop too quickly. The closer your revs are to the new gear the better.

sir i have a question lets say im cruising in 3rd gear and due to traffic i have to slow down my car using brake( with clutch down) and my speed reduces significantly to lets say 6mph. now here i have two option 1st is downshift and the 2nd method is stay in the same gear and hold the clutch at bite point while give gas so that my speed again start to raise. this cause a lil bit shaking or vibration in my cars cabin. do u think the 2nd method will hurt my clutch or engine??? pls clearify my doubt.
@ConquerDriving
@ConquerDriving 4 жыл бұрын
Using the second method would certainly wear your clutch. Make sure you use your gears as much as possible to reduce strain on your clutch and engine.

so, the slower method where you hold the gas while gently releasing the clutch pedal is similar to moving off from a stand still, right?

What about revving to 2.5 to 3K in first gear and then getting into 2nd gear very quickly( without holding the clutch )before the revs go below 1.5K + quick and sturdy throttle input. I own a 2008 civic and getting two 2nd gear can be a pain in the back.

The gears synchro may be worn, but I have found changing the gear oil has made selecting gears easier, but not always, it depends what the problem is. The trouble with really quick gear changes is it can be difficult to make it smooth.
