Thanks for this. I've lived in the village all my life. I lived in " cardboard city " SHINWELL ESTATE as a child for a few years. It got its name from the fact that several actually blew down or lost their roofs in bad wind. I can remember the radio mast ( mid 60s ) and the water tower ( early 70s ) being constructed. There is a disused railway tunnel at the very entrance to the village that leads to the A1. It is now boarded up but as children we would walk through it many times. I attended both schools ( school street and common lane ) both are housing estates now. The Upton country park was the upton colliery site. I remember it being landscaped in the 70s.

I lived at the bottom of Hill Estate at number 9, my dad had the motorbikes.. I spent a lot of time with a tennis racket and ball at the back of old Upton Youth Club. I remember in the early 80s (my mum) Lesley Reed and the caretaker Lorraine Wilson running the youth club for us kids. Going to Upton Middle school up common lane with the best headmaster in the world, Mr Street. Happy days ☺️

I remember you :) Both Harewood Lane Primary School and Upton Middle School were amazing schools that I loved dearly. I agree with you about Mr.Street what a truly terrific man. He did so much and gave so much, they don't make em like him anymore.

I lived on Richmond Road when I was 14 and left when I was 23. The place where I came of age. Always was a bit rough around the edges like most ex mining areas but I'll always have fond memories of it.

Upton - yes the old building at the crossroads was a shop. Also an off licence selling drinks. Halfway up Field lane on the left between the flats and new developments is a semidetached house. The lower one was a shop. A general store run by my Uncle And Aunty Burgess in the 60s and 70s. Turn left at the Upton arms and you get to the main Wakefield road which before the upgrade had a bridge where the old railway from the pit to south Elmsall ran. Turned into a footpath. Turn Left there you can go to the Hamlet of North Elmsall where there is a lovely church. So much has changed over the last 30 years

I have completed Wakefield Philip. Given you mention the church, you might like my North Elmsall video!

The plaque to Terry Clarke! He was the barber on high street. I can remember a haircut ( short back and sides ! ) Going up to 20p. I once ran away without paying ( I was 10 yes old ) and spent the money on sweets ) he got his own back though as many times later I would pick him up at bus stops as he was going from one club to the other. We always laughed that he's got that 20p back many times over. A village character was Terry R.I.P

Great video. Just to the bottom side of the lake in Upton Country Park there is a disused railway line (now a walking path), it takes you towards Wrangbrook where you will find a very spooky tunnel (locally known as the ‘Tunnies’) that stretches a few hundred yards towards the A1. Worth researching as it was thought to be haunted. Famous comedian and footballer Charlie Williams resided in Upton

Charlie Williams had an auntie ( Mrs Bedford ) lived in harewood lane. At the very end house on harewood lane lived Leonard parkin who was the resident news reader on " news at ten " for several years. The train tunnel is actually 3/4 of a mile. It was part of the Barnsley to hull ( via Goole ) line. It mainly transported coal. During the miners strike of 1984 many of us went out on to the old pit area to dig and forage for coal. It was a hot summer but a cold winter. I'm 61 now. Lived in the village all my life.

I am certain that the Youth Centre is actually part of the old what was Upton Hall estate, it’s been years since I wrote a research paper on it but off the top of my head it was either the stables or some other outbuilding that was extended and renovated. One thing I do remember is a news item I came across from a rather gruesome murder that happened locally to there involving a gun, and me telling someone local and them informing me it’s haunted, which seem apt. If you remind me I’ll try to dig out the research. On that note, a totally separate event involving a gun, my relative was shot to death in a pub in the village, thought I’ve never lived there I researched his death and found evidence of an ongoing feud f between families that, from all reports, a blind eye was turned in the investigation but those were different times. The shooting was put down to an accident when, with the power of modern research tools, it’s obvious now it was murder and an ongoing feud.
