Just amazing! I'd bet there isn't another soul on earth that can do that. Some day I'd like to see you do some hand drilling on a digital scale of some sort. I'm curious about the downward force you are able to apply. Stroke speed and downward force are the key variables to control and you manipulate the spindle patiently and fairly slowly. I'm guessing you downward force is tremendous. Those kettle balls no doubt help. In other news, I got back from camp yesterday. The primitive pump drill project was a success! It is very cool!! I also have a new computer and will set it up this week. Hope to get the video of our efforts out next week sometime.

My friend Andy wanted to put my set on a scale and measure the force, too. I don't think it would be that much different than others but I could be wrong. Hope you're doing well friend. I'm on a high from this challenge so I'm gonna go burn some energy!!

@@boggycreekbeast I'm a bowdrill expert, still trying to master your fire roll.

@@countsmyth The bowdrill is far more efficient due to its mechanical advantage. Fire roll even easier. I'm just playing around above. That said, with enough practice any skill, practical or not, is attainable.

So what happens when you pierce the board? Or maybe you should just show us

Pierce the board?
@Johnhanddrillproject Жыл бұрын
I was just curious if you get a ember when you drill threw the board The rest of the way when the hole is deep enough to punch through the other side. None the less. Your videos were cool man. I’m glad someone is sharing stuff like that I excited to honing my skills, and doing some of these techniques too lol sometimes I get too excited I guess
@boggycreekbeast Жыл бұрын
@@Johnhanddrillproject I honestly don't know. I would think that if you hit rock bottom, so to speak, you might snuff out the ember. I generally only go about half way through the board and then start a new divot. One of the main reasons I like the notchless method is because I can get a few more embers per divot than a notch. I like practicing at home with it and I don't have to cut a fresh notch each time. That said, when I go for an on the spot ember with a fresh set in nature, or a solid wood set, then I definitely cut a notch. I totally relate LOL Friction fire is exciting.

I can't recall where I saw it but pretty sure it was an indigenous person doing the hand drill but the hands floated up and then back down the drill. It looked cool and was quick and effective - but clearly something that needed some practise. Great to see more content from you BCB. I demonstrated the rudiger roll to a friend - and it was only my first try, but his mind was blown. Good instructions from you.

When you travel back down the drill after floating to the top its much easier to get an ember. I'm only floating up the spindle which is far more difficult. What I'm doing above is not practical. I'm just having fun
