Damn, the model looks great, pretty much identical. One question though, from what I've seen, many modelers prefer to use 2.79 over the updated versions of Blender. Why is this? Am I missing something important?

Because the old render engine in 2.79 is closer to the Scanline renderer in 3ds Max, which is what Scott used. It's basically easier to create accurate looking materials and lights with the older version.
