The convention arose primarily because of nationalist bickering over names. In the case of Uranus, while ancient Greek achievements were magnificent they didn't have a clue Uranus existed. Herschel who discovered it named it "the Georgium Sidus" (the Georgian Planet) in honor of King George III of England. The name Uranus was first proposed by a later German astronomer Johann Elert who had no interest in perpetually calling an entire planet in our solar system after an English king. (ditto for everyone other than anyone English at the time)

Uranus’ poles experience 42 years of continuous sunlight, and then 42 years of continuous darkness. During the time of the equinox on Uranus, the planet’s equator is facing the Sun, and so it experiences day/night cycles like we have here on Earth. What could have caused Uranus to be tilted over on its side like this? Astronomers think that a large protoplanet smashed into Uranus billions of years ago. This collision set the planet tumbling.
