We've had a Brittany in our lives for over 50 years now. The first one we got was a 10 month old I found at the shelter in Wichita. He was left there by his "human" and he told the staff he was too stupid to hunt!! Well, Tex was one of the most incredible hunting dogs we've ever had!! But then again all of our beautiful Brittany's gave been the best of the best. He was papered and had a great bloodline, but back then because they didn't spay/neuter before adoption, they prohibited giving up papers to keep you from breeding. We didn't care because he was a beloved furbaby that lived to be 15 years old. We has several in-between then and our sweet 12 year old TJ, he is my other heartmate, my furbaby soulmate!! If he's not welcome, I'm not welcome. His intelligence has overwhelmed us at times. We got him at 6 weeks old, he potty trained himself, he then went on to do things that not even human children do. He first got his dad's shirt when he wanted to go out, if I got out of bed he would get up on my side, put his head on my pillow after rolling over on his back to keep me from getting back in bed. If I ask what are you doing, he'll open one eye and then pretend to be asleep. His hunting skills are outstanding, we hunt on our own property, so he goes down an sights in the birds, he will only hunt with us. He doesn't play fetch, if you throw a ball he looks at you as if to say "You don't really think I'm gonna go get that, do you"? We have tennis balls all over the hay meadow, probably mulched over by now, lol. So if you want a high energy, happy go lucky, gorgeous hunting breed, get yourself a Brittany!! But go into it expecting a full fledged family member, a housemate, a heartmate, a furbaby to love until the end...

You should get one. I’ve had two. One liked to hunt, the female was lazy. She mostly layer around. The male didn’t like it when I left him. When I came back he would be so excited. He couldn’t stand still. He also was very very vocal. Load, he wanted you to know he’s there pay attention to me. So when I came in the house I expected at least 5-10 minutes with him. Or else he’d get louder and louder. Love tha dog. I want another one just like him. He was small, the runt of the bunch. I liked his smallness.

Dante is so cute! I would like to get a Brittany but people keep trying to talk me out of it. I've owned many dogs before. I hike a minimum of 12 miles 2 days a week. I would be able to provided at least 1.5 hours of vigorous exercise a day. Obedience and recall training would start from day 1 and I would like to get them into hunting training even though it is illegal to hunt with dogs in my state... They say that isn't enough especially because I live in small house with a small yard in the city. Ugh... I don't know what is realistic for this breed.

If you can give him that much exercise & attention, that's great for a Brittany. They have a lot of stamina and love/ NEED to run/hike off leash if possible. However, you have to be really careful when they are young because the breeder wants you to wait 2 years until neutering. When intact males hit puberty/ sexual maturity around 10 months all that puppy training disappears and they don't listen & don't come when called & try to run away. It's normal but scary & frustrating. Dont worry though (if you decide to get one), Dante is my mom's 5th Brittany and they are a wonderful breed as long as they are properly socialized as young pups. He's 3 yrs now & really sweet, friendly, always comes when called, great w/ kids & people & other dogs. He loves to chase birds, bees & butterflies Lol! 🦋🐝

@@canisamator7937 thanks for your reply. I'll get one once I move. I'll be on my own where I am going so having a friend will be really nice. The dogs I've owned since I've been out of my parent's house have been females so I never dealt with male dog puberty before so I will try to stick with females as I don't have any experience with that. I was very young when we had male dogs so I don't remember any of that. If I do get a male, the warning is much appreciated!

@@ccddle we didnt neuter our oldest till he was 2.5yrs (covid delayed) and while I was worried about him running off, he had a solid off leash/ecollar training and it never happened. ( was it the fact we live out in the country and there were no girl dogs in heat? maybe, no way to tell) but i would rather control an intact male from running off than try to keep an intact female from attracting/tying with a male ... especially if I lived in the burbs or more urban area. that is just my 2 cents

@@ccddle Over the years I have had 6 Brittanies--3 males and 3 females. It is just my opinion and while each dog was a unique personality, I conclude that the females were actually better behaved. Maybe it was just coincidence, but the males all seemed to be much more "high spirited"-naughty. But I loved them all!

dante is adorable! did he experienced any health issues before? i'm planning to get a brittany but really afraid of health issues.
@ZillasCoop3 жыл бұрын
what health issues are you worried about? I would suggest joining some brittany groups on facebook and read/search what they experience. I have 2 britts one is 3+ yrs and the other is almost 3yrs ... zero health issues (so far) . I have heard sometimes epilepsy is common and some allergies but I think both are typically managable.
