In this video I show how I harvest local logs. This is called urban logging and involves the harvesting of local trees found in urban environments. I use my equipment trailer and a hand powered winch to recover the timber on my trailer.
I use Stihl chainsaws and a winch called the more power puller.
Future videos are being planned/produced and will be uploading soon.
Thanks for watching.

I got lucky in Jan/Feb. I found 2 subdivisions being put in within 20 miles. Probably got 100 pine logs up to 24" X 24'. Also got about 100 oak logs from 12"x 8' up to 42" x 18'. Almost all of them loaded by the equipment operator on site. Took them biscuits every morning.

I know I’m late to the party, but I built a couple of log dollies that ended up being a lot less work than a come-along/winch. I used a piece of 2x6 about 2 ½’ long with 1000 lb pneumatic tires at the ends, then added 2 2x4s (about 2’ long each) perpendicular to the 2x6 with a gap between to act as a log cradle. I made one with articulating wheels, and the other with fixed wheels. I lift one end of the log (farm jack would work) and attach the dolly with a couple of ratchet straps around the log, then do the other end. Now the log is one big cart that you can push pretty easily by hand, or drag up the trailer ramp. I also found if you chock the wheels of the trailer, and put jack stands under the front and back to stop it tipping, you can attach a tow strap to the truck and the log, with the strap going over the top of the trailer, and just drive the log straight up into the trailer. Enjoying your videos - I only recently found them. Looks like you’re having lots of fun :)

Wgere might one find a "More Power Puller"? Is it better than a regular come a long? Also on my Bumper Pull trailer I have a 12000# winch I use for this among other things and I also have a log lift apparatus that works in combo with the winch that oes where the ramps would. I plan to move this winch to my 7 ton gooseneck in the future tho..

Just subscribed. I hate poison ivy. It used to grow in the fence, until I hit it with concentrated Round-Up (no water mixed in). What is the white stuff you're painting onto the end of the logs?

Watching you load the logs was agonizing after seeing your portable winch in action. What percentage of valuable trees would you estimate go to waste vs going to a mill? (with waste defined as cut into firewood or left to rot)
@OutoftheWoods0623
@OutoftheWoods0623 6 жыл бұрын
Around here probably 80 go to waste maybe more. Sad.

Hey that is excellent Video, I would vote for more collecting video's like this of how you retrieve your logs just need a electric winch on the trailer LOL I doubt if you have any of this material there as we know it, it's called Wattle, and of the two I believe there is one called Black Mahogany here, it only lives 15 to 20 years and is usually quick to regrowth but it is a very hard furniture timber with Black timber, now I am really looking to have a play with it after watching your video's but I have no clue of drying times or other issues yet. Can you please tell me your gut instincts in if a tree had been dead for a long time and still standing does that time count any in your book with drying or does the drying process only really begin when the timber is slabbed? we have a saying here in Australia that is about 1 inch takes 1 year to air dry, would you hold with that? And what is your name? Thanks Garry
@OutoftheWoods0623
@OutoftheWoods0623 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Gary, for me the drying times starts after the log is sawed. One inch per year isn't true in my neck of the woods. I live in Tennessee and we have hot summers and mild winters, usually a few summer months and one inch boards are ready for the kiln. An electric winch would be nice but I use what I have. thanks for watching as always. Nathan,
@AttitudeAdjuster
@AttitudeAdjuster 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, that is for sure Nathan we get there in the end if we are lucky and we all are stretching the rubber band as far as we can on the budget. can you cart your skid steer with you or is it to heavy for the trailer?

Thought you were a different man without the beard. I feel naked when i trim mine lol. When you scale the log do you include the sapwood or does it depend on species? I saw a video where they were scaling redwood and they didnt include the sapwood i believe, when it was downed
