One approach that many foreign cities have taken with the "mixed-use" concept, is multiple uses within a single building. We often see this example in older US cities like New York, Boston and parts of Philadelphia. Shops and businesses on the ground floor, with apartments above. In larger buildings, such as 9+ floors, there could be offices on some floors above the retail. Also, as the narrator mentions, keeping everything within walking distance makes a huge improvement. Some of my favorite examples of this is in older European cities such as Dortmund, Dresden, Avignon and Sevastopol.

Walkability changes with the type of community you have. Typically, people will only walk 1/4 mile. But if it's a nice urban area, they would be willing to walk 1/2 a mile, 3/4 a mile, a mile, or more. I spent some time in a small city in Greece, and I walked 3/4 of a mile to and from my destination everyday and thought nothing of it. One day I walked for several miles through town without an issue, and even the elderly people were walking longer distances.

Walkways or sidewalks that feature trees also help reduce carbon dioxide and helps filter pollutants and provide shade on hot days.

i find it funny how the leading argument against smart growth initiatives is that it increases property value to the point that makes it uninhabitable by lower income groups. This is because one: people want to live in those communities are there are too few of them!! And two, there isn't enough regulation towards affordable high density development! We need to make our communities more walkable and less centered around car use and suburban sprawl

I'm considering getting my masters in urban planning (not sure which area i would concentrate in....either environmental or transportation) how would you describe the job outlook? I'm a bit worried I will graduate and not be hired (on all job websites, planner jobs, even at entry level all require 5 years of experience). How does one break into this type of work? Is it through internships or what? I keep scratching my head... I have a Bachelors but no way to get my foot in the door

I like the safe walkways in parking lots. You'd think that would be a common sense thing but most parking lots don't have them where I live.

Duh!!!!! Try looking at Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx. They were all walk-able neighborhoods even when the subway system went in! Who ruined all that? Robert Moses with his love of the automobile. Those were walk able neighborhoods and he cut though all of them with his love of the highway.
