Hi hi. I highly suggest for drawing with fountain pens, use Hot Press watercolor papers. Cold Press is not so good unless you want textures. For CP papers I would rather use pencil…. Hope that helps!!

It's amazing how you make everything look so easy. And I've never used blue to build up skin tone. It's surprising how you made it work. I always make mistakes in painting skin. Sometimes mine turn up too yellow, sometimes they're too red.

This is really amazing. The drawing is simple and yet really tells a story. I love it! A question - what kind of paper do you use? the pen marks are smooth so I am guessing its not watercolour paper? Is it cartridge paper or something else? And what weight?

Hi thank you for your kind words. I use either Cold Press or Hot Press watercolor papers. I use between 190gsm and 300gsm. In this case HP 300gsm.

It’s always so fun to watch you sketch. How long did this piece take you in real life? 😅 A lot of great tips especially on drawing the perspective right. I really like how you often draw the outline shape before filling in the details. It’s interesting how you always get the perspective and size right even when you start with the outline! I’m still getting a mess 😆

It took me about an hour to draw and color. I focus a lot on the SIZE. If you get that wrong that’s it. Recovery mode all the way to the end… been there done that too many times… so I guess learnt from experience….

I like the video, but sometimes is a bit difficult to relate to urban sketching when you are sketching from a photo, because in real life peoples move quickly and change in their perspectives. It would be really interesting if you can make videos on location.😉

It is true! The experience is completely different. But let me offer 2 points. 1) if you cannot sketch from photo you cannot sketch live. It is 5 times (or more) more difficult sketching real life than from photo. So it is good practice with photo. 2) You need to design, even urban sketching. Even if you choose not to use imagination when placing figures, you will still to move around and find the perspective you want, i.e. design your sketch. Before you start drawing. Otherwise, the aesthetic outcome of your sketch will be a hit and miss. Your suggestion is a valid and a good one. I’ve been thinking about doing video on site, but the Covid situation in Singapore is not helping. So have to wait a little more 🙏🙏 😊

I completely agree with your points, I have my art degree in design so I’m kinda “trained” in the design area, but I was looking for more tips and tricks specifically in drawing people in urban sketching/sketching on location setting, so yea… hopefully the covid situation is going to get better soon.
