i want one of these but is six inches the farthest distance available for the paper pots? this wouldn't be a huge problem as i could plant every other pot to achieve 12 inches for say tomato plants. but is it discernible as to which pots will come out of the planter at every other one? i'm currently planting about 8 acres by hand. i have to grow a huge variety of vegetables to market them to the public. i live in a very sparsely populated area. variety is a must to be profitable.

In my experience working on an organic produce farm for the last season with the paper potter at our disposal, it is an invaluable tool. I will say there seems to be a slight bit of transplant shock which was to be expected, however, the usefulness of having your plants properly spaced and perfectly in row while increasing efficiency way outweighs the potential drawbacks from stunting growth a week or two. This tool is essential for anyone looking to ramp up their market farm/garden production and efficiency. Thanks for sharing.

Just like everything else, there is always someone out there wanting to take advantage of great ideas to gouge others all in the name of business. Greed! Going to be fair, a huge portion of that is the contraption itself but you could get away with buying your own flats that fit the size of the paper racks and also make your own "dibbler". Just plant the seeds yourself into the flat then use the paper and the contraption. It may not produce absolutely "Optimal" results if you don't get proper measurements for your "dibbler" but being fair that'd knock hundreds of dollars off of the price. You could also get it from Asia apparently. If you use your own head you can get around prices really easy.
@neoplasmax5 жыл бұрын
The one thing as a person who likes creating inventions myself, is the non-reuseabiltity of this item without "specialized seeding planters" that come apart by the row in a chain effect.. ok I like the chain idea.. that was kind of thinking out of the box of the tool.. So I just drag a spke down the middle buy the paper chaining planters and tie one end to a stake at the end and drag them out of my wagon with a hole cut out.. While dragging spike on next row, cover your first one you did with the planters in.. SO it's not going to be 7 minutes.. It maybe be around 15 -20 this way.. still a substancial cut down from an hour before.. Till I come up with a way to do this without the investment in specialized paper chain planters, that's about cheap you may get it wihout buying the tool.. Kind of makes you wish the "Open Source Everything" idea was already working society.. We couldl knock donw the costs of the world to about 10% of the costs today and no patents or copywrites to fool with .. They are only for elites anyway to control a cure or something.. Anyway...

Nathan I just had a visual of lawn mower size device that lays four rows at the same time. laying down four wheels of seed strip. And you could plant tomatoes, squash and larger spaced plant seeds. Only draw back would be your starting seeds, not seedlings. But lettuce grows fast enough. Would still have a huge market. Could even pull behind garden tractor or ATV. Talk about fast!

+DragonflyArtz1 why not make it selfdriving? one of those gasoline lawn mowers as base and to provide some weight 4 strips at the same time. you place it at the start, start it and it slowly moves along. make sure it drives a straight line and all is fine. an old hand truck to move the device around without problems... i would guess you could build such a machine for a couple of hundred $, if not free using old parts over the winter.

I don't want to sound like a cheapskate but for a small garden, not ran for profit, where it wouldn't be worth it to buy the planter....Couldn't you just buy the accordion pots for $4 a piece and then just dig a long trench and pull them out by hand in big strips and then go back and put the soil over top by hand and still save a lot of time? So... in summary, use the flats but not the planter? I at least like this idea better than ripping off this company by buying a chinese ripoff model as some people have suggested.
@stephenchilcott15957 жыл бұрын
Technically you'd need to buy the 50$ spreader frame first... I'm pretty sure I could make a drop seeder, spreader bars and use a regular flat.

human line formed from transplanter will NEVER match up. not a chance
@dawsonmehalko7117 жыл бұрын
actually, you may be wrong. The plants are probably only going to be 1 square inch and if you're burning 2 inch wide holes in the fabric you could possibly pull it off it you get good enough.and if need be you can bend the plant a little bit in each hole to get it through the hole after you lay the fabric.
@johncraftenworth78477 жыл бұрын
the issue is, the line the planter makes won't be straight, making the rows of slightly inconsistent lengths, even the template will not be burned in perfectly straight and even, and multiply those slight spacing inaccuracies out over 50ft or 80 or whatever your row length is, with multiple rows per bed, and many many beds on the farm, it's gonna be nothing but a headache to try. you'd need cnc machines, perfectly flat ground (doesn't exist, even small bumps and slight grade changes that affects the distance up and down to compound on left and right problems), the ability to stretch the mulch just right, if you stretch too much, don't stretch every inch of the landscape fabric the same, it'll start changing the length and throw things off as well. I'd bet BIG money against it ever working. There is the story of the chinese messenger being punished for not making a journey that was judged to take a set amount of time. The messenger argued that going up and down made the distance he traveled different than the distance the crow flies or that a messenger travels on flatter ground. The judge was wise and agreed with the messenger. That's the same problem you'd have here with laying plastic over the top plus a number of others.

I've been amazed by these for a few weeks, but I'm wondering what happens to the paper on the back end. How fast does it degrade? Is it dissolved by the time of harvest, or does the paper get stuck in your tilling implements? It looks like it would protect well against cut worm with a built-in collar for each transplant. This is a really exciting innovation! I just wonder what kind of nightmare having all that paper in the ground creates at harvest time.

i thought i heard JM talk about this briefly in some video i saw but he said that he couldn't get it certified organic??
@heartlandranchtv49437 жыл бұрын
+Timothy Roy Yes, JM mentioned in one of his interviews with Curtis that he had been experimenting with the planter, but that there was an issue with the glue not being "organically certifiable". However, I just watched the interview of Conor Crickmore over on Diego Footer's channel, and he has been using this product extensively on his farm (neversink), which IS certified organic (granted he is in the US, so there may be a difference between US and Canadian requirements). Hopefully, Curtis will address this issue in a future update video. In my opinion, though, "organic" is mostly just a bullshit marketing scam that doesn't actually mean what most people think it means (same with deceptive and vague terms like "free-range", "grass-fed", "sustainable", "green", etc.) So, being certified organic is actually highly overrated for most farmers, and will add nothing but additional headaches, overhead costs, and bureaucratic red tape to your operation (think about how the LEED certification scam has crippled home builders across North America and Europe. It really all depends on what market you're in, as to whether you need to be "certified" to stay competitive.

Amazing machine but for my small growing area I have a small drop seeder. You fill the hopper with seeds, select a plate sized for the seed, walk it down the garden, it digs a trench, drops a seed at the proper interval for the seed type, gently covers the seed. No bending over and nothing to buy once you get the seeder for less than $200. Of course you're still at the whims of mother nature for the seeds to sprout but ideal for the small gardener who plants rows of seeds each year. Mine will handle seeds from tiny up to large beans with ease.
