I lived on the street as a child. At night.I hopped fences just to eat from people gardens. I got caught. That guy seen I was eating not stealing. He made me come back day after day to his orchard. He made me work the land. I ended up leaning never to go hungry again.

Great video! Fun fact I cannot but post: I realized the dream of literally year round fruits ready for harvest in my garden by planting one (1!) single tree: My Jamaican cherry produces less in Jan and Feb, but even now I can pluck some sweet additons for muesli or for flavored teas. So wonderful to go out each morning, breathe some fresh air, stretch and bend while plucking and collecting fruits. Such a blessing! Keep up your motivation and disciplined work and your harvest will be totally worth it! And in the meantime I will learn from you for my other fruit trees to come...

I live in the Southern Hemisphere, l have struggled to find a good video on pruning etc. Our climate where l live here in New Zealand is similar to yours, so I just have to reverse the months of the year to follow your directions. We recently purchased an off the grid block of land with a new orchard. We have Blood red and Navel oranges, and mandarins. Unfortunately the neighbours Wagyu cattle got through and destroyed most of our orchard, ( we have had a new boundary fence put in and blocked the passage through our adjoining creek). so I am now nursing the young trees that have survived. It is spring here and the young trees are full of bud and new shoots. I have been worried about pruning them and shaping the new growth, but you have been very informative, and l feel encouraged to do the necessary deed if l want the best for these trees. Thank you. Some of our other new neighbours are giving me cuttings off their heritage fruit trees, pear, apple, nectarines, plum, apple, fig, grape vines, bananas, pineapples etc. l have also planted pomegranates, Feijoas, Tamarillo, passion fruit, thornless blackberry, raspberries and blueberries. Plus I planted the beginnings of a vegetable garden. I can’t wait until we start reaping the benefits of my hard work. People like you are a valuable source of information and encouragement. Thanks again.

I knew a retired gardener with his own small backyard orchard. He had a 4 step very safe podium ladder. The mature trees were not allowed to grow higher than he could reach from his ladder. It made great sense to me. Make sure not to plant trees over your sewer line.

Just discovered you. Really good video. I have pruning videos and it's incredible how much our methods align. One thing I'd like to add about the paint - another great option is a lime whitewash - much better for the environment and soil if any gets washed into it. Also you mentioned that you aren't worried as much about the winter sun, and that's because of where you are. However, way up here in Zone 4 it's precisely the winter sun that is of concern and why we also whitewash trees. The winter sun warms the trunk up and it expands. Then the cold night temps come and it contracts. This swell/shrink cycle can split bark and lead to gummosis. Peaches are especially vulnerable to this. So for those of you who are in colder climates and think "I don't need to protect my trunk from the sun", you really should. Great video, excited to watch this grow. You should consider turning that area into a food forest. You can check out my food forest, it's pretty awesome. Basically it would entail adding the 6 other layers of a forest into the planting. Then again, your space is a little more urban (hence the channel) and a wilder look may not be desired. If it were me though, I'd cram the interspaces with bushes, flowers, groundcovers and turn that orchard into an ecosystem.

@@urbanfarmstead we lived in New Jersey in Perth Amboy. And we had a big yard. My mom’s Portuguese’s friend was a good gardener. He planted a fig tree. To winterize it he wrapped in burlap and dug a trench and buried under leaves inside the trench and soil. In spring he would dig it out. And tie support on opposite sides so that it would grow straight. He did the same thing with peach tree. After the trees were thick enough he would just wrap it up with thick burlap and leaves. It never died during the winter.

hey a trick to help your tree roots grow good and deep bury a section of PVC pipe at an angle down under the root ball. you can keep a cap on it to keep pests and things from accessing the roots. when you water and feed your tree do so by pouring some down the pipe. once the tree gets good and settled in you can remove the pipe and let the tree grow like normal.

Nice video but just a suggestion- if you plant in an off-set pattern (like a zigzag) the roots will have more room than if you but them in a straight line. That can be a big advantage to those of us with even smaller spaces.

This is my first video that I’ve watched from your channel and I am totally hooked! Your explanation on pruning was the most clear I’ve ever heard/seen, and turned a previously anxiety-inducing activity into one I think I will actually enjoy. Fantastic! Subscribed!

Thank you so much! In addition to doing a lot of fruit tree pruning, I’ve also watched a lot of the sand videos you’ve likely watched over the years, so I know exactly what you mean. My main goal here on KZbin is to demystify garden/growing food for people. Thank you for your feedback and encouragement!

Yeah. The spacing really impressed me too. I wonder if all fruit trees can be spaced and pruned this way. Like the Mango & Sapote varieties. Pete :")

Finally, a gardening channel near my town. I live here in Vacaville, so we have a similar climate! I am pretty excited to have found your channel. I am starting to plant fruit trees but my backyard is not huge! I often wondered about spacing. I bought my fruit trees online. I wish I found you before I did! Anyway, it is not too late since I learned a lot about planting, pruning, and painting on this video! Will keep on watching to learn more! Thank you so much for a great content. I learned a ton!

For those of you close to or above the snow line, Chicago Hardy is a good fig tree to use. It looks like it's dead once the real cold hits. Not kidding we thought our died, but it came back every year. After the squirrels figure out how to get the good figs though you'll have to beat them to the fruit.
