I live just in front of this place. And you guys just made my dream come true! When i was a child, i was allways observing from my window with my binoculars, this submarine, and the old ship wreck of Fragata Dom Fernando e Glória (now a museum), and along with a friend of mine we were allways planning on building a small boat to make it to the sub and the ship wreck, that we thought had a treasure on it. We managed to build a small boat but we never got to cross the fence at the shipyard (Lisnave), still active at the time. So, it was emotional for me to watch this adventure of yours. It was something i dreamed about doing in my chilhood years. Thanx a lot for this! You guys are great! Cheers! And keep up doing these great adventures! (y)

Here in south side Lisbon there are lots of cool places to explore. Most of them abandoned. Check out my pics on Instagram: @astroflexagram You should come back for more. Mostly retired sub will be chopping to pieces to keep its secret which has out of date. These rare subject that you won't get anywhere. As a former US fleet ballistic missile submarine sailor, the red light being on isn't necessarily a bad thing and doesn’t mean you’re at battle. The red light is used at night time when getting ready to go to periscope depth. Shortly before heading up to periscope depth, the control room and other rooms around the control room would be rigged for red for a short while to give the members of the ships control parties eyes a chance to adjust to being rigged for black since when you actually go to periscope depth the control room is rigged for black. Red light doesn’t affect one's night vision so you could easily go from red to black without needing to adjust and still be able to see perfectly. Since light from the outside can come inside the boat through the periscope… light inside can easily go out through the periscope making a huge white light on an otherwise pitch-black ocean.

What a nostalgic video... I visited this submarine many years ago when I was a child. I vaguely remembered the periscope and torpedo rooms. Back then I was still small, so I didn't reach the periscope to take a took, which was disappointing. It's sad to see this submarine abandoned, it could be serving as a museum or something. The crew is probably larger than you think. Most Navy submarines use what they called hot bunking, one person gets out another person goes in. we still do this in modern sub today as far as I know except for officers or captions. So a count of the bunk numbers is not the count of the crew most likely. Love the show guys just found the channel little bit ago.

Epic video, they should SO renovate and maintain this submarine and make it available during summertime for people who want to take shorter trips in the submarine. That's all part of the thrill of urbex. Tax payers from around the world pay for all of this military equipment. Hats off to these explorers who get to show us what some of what we paid for before the government scraps it. Im not against military. What Im against is keeping all of this fascinating stuff walled off from the public and scrapped. For example, not one of the old British aircraft carriers was saved. And nobody seen them but the ppl on board. Shame!

This particular sub was the former to last of its class in use by the Portuguese Navy. It was officially decomissioned in late 2005, and general manning and maitenance of the ship ceased shortly after. The last one of it's class was decomissioned in 2010, and is/will be used as a museum ship for the Navy. To my knowledge, the Paquistani Navy, which aquired one of these from Portugal in 1975, kept theirs operating until arround '06 also.

No they are not ! .. First Trespassing is not a serious crime ... small fine is the top thing they risk ... then legally the Navy Must argue for the actual trespassing action ... you see the site and the Sub MUST have a No trespassing sign ... even like that they could argue stuff like .. hey ... we do not read Portuguese :) ... anyway no Judge, if they even reach Court is going to be harsh on these guys .
@John_Smith__6 жыл бұрын
Actually they can and they will prosecute them ... Court cases can be called on their own country of origin. The navy said on the news they have press charges .. but consequences of trespassing are minimal .. at best they will be charged a fine. So no real damage made there ...

Exactly what I was thinking. Just for fun or not, considering what happened last year I doubt the Navy/Government are going to let this slide. I get that they love the adventure, but they broke the law and risk facing prosecution for a video. :/ Not only is Lisnave private property, the submarine although abandoned, it's still property of the Navy. Not having the video as proof might be a good idea next time. 😂 That said, I would've died after 5 minutes inside, I'm extremely claustrophobic.😅 Imagine if someone came by to close the hatch permanently while they were inside. 😂
