(URBEX UK) Massive Abandoned Bus Graveyard Found

I found a bud graveyard! Something I’ve always had on my list and it wasn’t much of a journey at all. Some of the bendy bus information turned out to be incorrect, I was simply relaying what I heard on a KZbin video a few weeks back. Enjoy the video!

PLEASE READ! Since exploring the place I learned this site is still partially active. As you guys seem to really enjoy the video and it did take a while to make it’s still here but please don’t ask for any info on the location as I’m respecting the owners and not divulging a thing. For those who do somehow know the location I don’t advise visiting. Lots of Classic Buses laying around, as a bus geek myself it amazes me what buses that used to be around, Bristol VRs, Leyland Olympians with ECW, East Lancs bodies and some Low Floor buses. The most interesting ones are the 2 rare Leyland National Bendys from DAB, I believe this bus was featured in the 2006 film Children of Men! Would be great if those 2 can be saved, think it be unlikely. Maybe they could do a Vintage Running Day in York, I know York has a few Bendys in Service maybe Cities that had Bendys could do Vintage Running Days with those buses.

The first "Bendy" buses were for South Yorkshire PTE. They bought them and then found out that they were not legal to operate on bus services in the uk if the operator was charging a fare, so they ran them as a free city centre service in Sheffield. A few years later they were made legal. The original ones were replaced with newer versions, but the service stopped. At least two of them went to the south west and ran in Bristol or Bath.

The "bendy" buses you see there are actually rarer than you think. They are the original Leyland National articulated vehicles and predate the Leyland DAB`s that came later. The Leyland Nationals date from the early 80`s with some built in `79. The DAB`s camein around the mid 80`s. The DAB`s were removed from serviced and mostly sold to Australia. The last "Bendies" were the Mercedes Citaro version, which had a habit of squashing cyclists and going up in flames in London.

The Leyland ‘bendies’ need to be saved, there’s a few bus preservation societies out there now that would love the chance of saving them to add to there collections

Not true. We have had Scania Omnicity bendys & even Citaro G2 bendys in the UK since the London Citaros.

They are not Leyland Nationals. They are Leyland DAB chassis built in Denmark with Workington fabricated bodies using National parts, both buses being used by SYPTE.

3:06 that bus is still in public use which would lead me to believe that this is some sort of storage facility for buses which hasn't been untouched for that long...

Although several commenters note that this is an active site, looking at many of the buses, they are somewhat older than those you would find going through a scrap yard and some have clearly been restored to a degree, while others probably set aside as future restoration projects or sources of spares for restoring another vehicle - the bus equivalent of 'classic' cars - for example I saw Bristol REs and VRs which have not really been in widespread normal use for 15 years or more. In much the same way as many people who own a touring caravan don't have the space to store it and have to pay a yard to store it in the winter, so it is with preserved buses (and other comercial vehicles)! As with many privately preserved railway locomotives though, some will languish for years - owners always meaning to get on with the restoration, but never quite finding the time or spare cash, beyond the yard's rent. Many of these unrestored vehicles will end up as scrap once the decendents stop paying for space...

From what I remember when I was younger around 2004/05 that articulated National in the Eureka livery sat ready for scrap at the old Barnsley & District (now Stagecoach) depot, I'm not sure if they had more than one in this livery too, but it looks very much like it

Bendy buses were used in Greater Manchester, usually the 135 route, up until around 2017.

that site is WILD, as you can guess by my name, I do know quite a lot about this shit, the bendies are a extremely rare type of leyland national, the leyland national articulated - there’s also LOADS of things in this video that you just don’t see anymore, it’s crazy. Amazing video tbf

Perhaps those articulated busses are too long / large for some (UK) cityscapes. Here in the Netherlands (and elsewhere in continental Europe) very many operators employ them. Most of the new vehicles are electric e.g. VDL / Daimler-Benz Citea SLFA-180 Electric and some are gas (LPG or natural) or even hydrogen.

Bendy buses are legal, the problem is that although they can carry a lot of passengers there just ain't the call for a bus to carry that many people in the UK. They are very common in Europe though. Here in the UK where double deckers are the norm the amount of seats and the number of buses on that route are more than enough to cover the route. As a bus driver my licence covers me to drive a bendy bus without having to take a separate test but as they are rare I don't think I will ever get chance. Deckers carry 108 passengers where as bendy buses carry upto 200 people but Are high maintenance, so financially it makes sense to have low maintenance deckers full then a half full high maintenance bendy bus.

There is a call for bendy buses but why we have double deckers is to reduce congestion that a bendy bus makes. First Manchester had Scania Arctics up until 2014 when they scrapped them and replaced them with Double Deckers

I know where it is as i'm in the industry. At one point they used to have open days not sure why they stopped...Yes the site is still active as in the shed there are roadworthy buses and buses being restored

Yes, I have been contacted by the land owners about this. That’s why I’ve been discouraging people to visit the location and have kept the whereabouts classified. At the time I thought this place was derelict but made sure to be respectful and leave no trace (rubbish/damage etc.) besides the video 😂🤦

Bendy buses were only banned in London for “being too dangerous”, still in use other places in the UK.

Why are bendy busses to dangerous? In my home town in Germany (as I still lived there) the main busses are articulated busses from Mercedes or MAN and they work amazing an never had any bus related accidents or incidents. I love them, the only problem, here in Scotland they are useless because of the length, in the small villages wouldn’t be a chance to turn or drive through.

Turns out it’s an active site! Must’ve been sitting a while tho as a lot of them were starting to become part of the ground. There’s a comment somewhere explaining this. Happens sometimes when you find new locations 🤷‍♂️😕
