A knurl is turned: extruded cut inwards e.g. 0,015inch per side ( 0,03" on the diameter), the same amount the pyramids are forged outwards and the bosses should be (0,015"). So the nominal surface stays at the same place. Therefor if you only use a cut or boss you have to compensate the surface (50% of the cut or boss using e.g. move face). The purchase raw part outer diameter becomes 0,03" bigger (at the tip of the pyramids): Not of great importance for a knob, it does in case of e.g. an insert.

Thanks for this alternative method, however… I tried it and found that modelling the pyramids close to an edge means that the second direction inward facing outward draft creates tetrahedral points (from one base corner of the initial pyramid) right where the chamfer would be. With your method, it seems you have to leave part of the surface near the cylindrical ends unfinished which looks unrealistic. In my opinion either making a swept cut along a helical guide, or projecting a construction guide line onto the surface and do a swept cut from the end of the cylinder (which you can then pattern and mirror) is (a) much easier to execute and (b) gives a more realistic looking knurl. Having said all that, it’s always good to have a range of options…

Thanks for the great video. I also modeled a knurl by using a helix and swept cut, but it took my computer about 7 minutes to rebuild which is way too long. This method using a patterned boss only took a few seconds to rebuild. Mush faster! Thanks for the tip.

what is the weight of the file? I'm rolling on a long length, solidworks starts thinking for a long time, and the file size turns out to be insanely large (about 40 MB)

You must have spent a lot of time before making this video to figure what even numbered dimensions for the diamonds will work ? For instance you just can't taper extrude at any angle . It reaches a point then it stops extruding completely. I find this method will give visually impressive results but thats only if you know exactly what the diamond dimensions are . Nothing but perfect works at all .

I am self taught. 22 years ago I started when I was a 13 years boy there was no tutorial etc. The best way is learn program and go find a related work, then you will develop a lot.
