My son just bought an older 18v Makita grainer and tried it with a new battery. Nothing ... after that (and with some Heavens inspiration) I found this video and the old Makita is rocking it again with the new battery. Many thanks! World needs more people like you! Many blessings to you!

You saved me so much time today. Pulled out an older tool for a time sensitive project. Was really disappointed when my batteries didn’t fit. Thank you!

I’m seeing the blocking tab on the old tool. This means that Makita knew when they made the old tool, they were going to do this. Duck Makita! Thank mate. Big help. Saved me $$.

ureviews - brilliant and simple hack - 5***** - works perfectly - there are no connections on the old battery that are not on the new style to monitor any kind of thermal alarms or shutdown - so it's just Makita trying to make you buy a new tool when your old batteries become tired - VERY disappointing for an otherwise great and professional tool company like Makita Also, take note all Makita 18v users - the new 18v Makita charger is charging at 2.4 amps - keep your old charger with the built-in fan - that charges at 9 AMPS ! - 5 times faster !

I phoned Makita technical helpline today in UK. As helpful as they were, they didn't actually explain WHY they did this. I think everyone has already hit the nail on the head though, (bad behaviour Makita)! They didn't mention anything about newer batteries having thermal protection. They just said I had older model tools (2009) and they WILL NOT fit the new "star" batteries or 5amp. I'd have to buy more 3amp BL1830 batteries. I even explained that I think it's just a different notch and asked if it can be modified. They said you can have the whole base plate changed at a cost so it'd be cheaper to buy new batteries. What annoyed me most (after watching this great video, thank you) is that there is NO WAY Makita didn't know this was such an easy fix and yet promoted buying new tools/older batteries. Poor effort Makita.

Thanks. I just fixed mine with a Dremel. What's strange is that I bought a drill/driver set over 15 years ago and only the drill had the tab.

Thanks for the video. I only just bought a couple of makita tools and was wondering whether or not I can charge my 3 amp battery in the new 5 amp charger?
@ureviews2 жыл бұрын
Yes, if it's lxt the capacity doesn't matter for the charger.
@SadeeqSimmons Жыл бұрын
You definitely can. Totally interchangeable.

You can take your anglegrinder and cut little hole to your battery like newer battery have. So the warranty wont end. Second thing is, my tools have this thing metal not plastic, so it's harder to cut it off or remove.

Those are older tools that will never be under warranty

I have the 18v 3.0 ah tools and need to get new batteries as I'm down to 2. So can you charge a 5.0 ah battery on the original charger that I had to charge 3.0 ah batteries or do I now need to also buy a new charger too?
@ureviews2 жыл бұрын
I checked the new batteries do charge on the older chargers
@indy1725 Жыл бұрын
Question, if you cut out the little tab, is it still compatible with the older batteries? I've got all older ones now, and am looking to start replacing the old batteries but don't want to make the old ones useless if I don't have to.

Yes in fact you can, just not the other way around unless you do as the video proves. I've also done this prior to watching the video potentially risking ruining my older tools, they've paid for themselves time and time again so no worries 😂

My friend FYI Makita is manufacturing the new tools with that little nipple out of metal so your advise here is no longer valid unless you come up with a better idea how to remove the metal
@ureviews2 жыл бұрын
But the nipple was on the older tools... The new tools don't have it. Another option is to just get these after market excellent batteries at a fraction of the price: extrafudge.com/ref/B08G8R52FF
@jeffdurling100 Жыл бұрын
Not sure that you are tailing about. As stated this was only on older tools, none of the new ones have it. I have a bunch of Makita tools that are both older and newer. None ever had metal.
@oskarihellman520Ай бұрын
There is a metal nip on some newer tools. Just bought a Makita cordless cleaner DCL286FZB. I have plenty old light BL1815 1,5Ah batteries I want to use. I had to cut small sliver of plastic off from the batteries because of the metal nip on the cleaner.

This was just a crap move by Makita. The proof there is not any difference in the battery is the older chargers work with the new batteries. If there was any thermal monitoring (BS) that would be what would have it far more than the tool.
