I was a correctional officer for 30 years. Low pay, lack of motivation or just plain don’t care could be the cause. I’ve seen it all. Escapes will happen. Convicts are opportunists. When you have nothing to lose why not try? We now have over 2 million people locked up in the US. Way too many. Especially non violent. I worked a dormitory where it was just me and 85 convicts. Most of them serving life or long sentences. Administration told me if a fight broke out to lock myself in the control room and wait for the goon squad. I knew they could take over the whole compound any time they wanted. Glad I’m retired now.

His friends and family are most likely also in that area... He may be from Brazil but he didn't go back there for help the first time he escaped. That reporting is abysmal.

I literally carry my gun on me in my own yard, as well as have my dog loose.
