Thanks for this great work. I am an UH fan since 1973 and think this is one of the most versatile bands in rock history. Usually bands have kind of a constant sound even from one record to the next...in Heep, specially in the 70´s you can hear such different sounds as Lady in Black, July Morning, The Magitians Birthday, Salisbury, tears in my Eyes, The Park, Weep in Silence, just to mention a few.... They perfectly move from progressive rorck, to heavy, to acoustic, to ballads and so on. They kept changing arrangements, instruments..It is never boring to listen to a UH record! And in the first years they made an incredible and outstanding work also with the backing vocals. So I call you for a greatest challenge: Choose your best 50 song from Heep!

Hello Chris, thank you for your Uriah Heep Rank, my rank for their best records (70's Byron era) is near yours, only in different order, my first 3 Vinyls that I bought as a 16 y. teenager was Black Sabbath, Hendrix and Uriah Heep "very eavy..." ( Vertigo swirl label ) when it was published in 1970, now as a 66 y. "young" rockfan I never get tired to listen to their 70s records ! and now a little note to your No. 1 "Look at yourself" album, Uriah Heep made 1971 a promotion-tour for this album in Germany and came to my hometown Berlin, they played near the whole album live in a Disco, can you imagine how loud it was ? it was like a private concert for us, so close, I never forget this special evening with Heep....best to you and all the" Heepers" from Jogi

Chris, Excellent work on compiling this!! I was a huge Heep fan in the 70s & 80s. A lot of Heep fans get it wrong when they talk about their albums. They expect EVERYTHING to sound exactly like "Look At Yourself". Truth is the quality of the songwriting, the arrangements, the playing etc. should be how they are judged. So what if they experimented with different styles - as long as the songs had energy, passion, emotion!! I'm going to list a few songs that generally get slammed - yet these are all great songs. Can't Keep A Good Band Down, Your Turn To Remember, Lucy Blues, Blind Eye, Shadows & The Wind, Free Me, Feelings, Make A Little Love, Shady Lady, Wise Man etc. Tiger.

So I was on vacation, completely phone, text, email and internet free for 7 days. Then we entered into the Bermuda Triangle (for real) and a KZbin message pops up on my phone that this video is up but I had no internet or signal. This was the video you were destined to make. Perfection! I only have 13 of their records so far but will continue this journey to the end. The only thing I can add is Goalby also played with Dave Holland in Trapeze, who later went on to play with Al Atkin's former band. Also Trevor Bolder was one of the best electric bass players I've ever seen in my life. Great video, this one's for the ages. Jon

Dude this was so much fun. I missed about an hour and a half of work today because I kept taking breaks in order to give this my full attention. You are the second reviewer in a row who has gotten it right-- Look At Yourself is better than Demons And Wizards. I was there through it all and neither me or any of my friends ever doubted Demons and Wizards was their masterpiece. I still love it, however Look at Yourself, which was the first Heep album I ever heard, has forced its way to the top due to the strength of its best songs and the overall metal sound. Wizards is a perfect album from start to finish in that there are no weak songs. Look At Yourself is more powerful but unfortunately has one of the weakest Uriah Heep songs of all time IMHO, which is What Should Be Done. Thank you so much for making my day and I am really looking forward to listening to some of the post- Byron songs you have praised I will probably chime in again later when I get home because it really sucks it really sucks dictating this into a phone and having to correct so many mistakes due to AI. Great video Chris. I wouldn't normally stick with a video of this length for a rankings video where I hadn't heard a single note of any of the music (!), but you did such a wonderful job of the commentary that it slipped by with no sweat at all. What an intriguing, epic career this band had. I had no idea John Wetton had been a member. It was great hearing about all the different album artists and the various other work they did. I have a factoid in return about the cover of the Whitesnake live album you showed near the end (which you might know anyway), but unless my memory deceives me, that cover is by Jeff Cummins, a British artist who in the seventies did a lot of book jacket illustrations for the TARGET range of Dr Who novelisations, which I collected assiduously as a kid, and still own to this day. He also did the fantastic tri-gatefold cover for Wings Greatest, Rainbow's Straight Between The Eyes and lots of others.. Anyway, back to your video, really great job and I'll be increasingly on the look-out for affordable Heap records in my future digs. Cheers, James

Funny how everyone has such different opinions. I honestly can't remember the order he just gave but I have some of it fairly well down. I first saw Heep on Innocent Victim tour/w Tull. A few years earlier my cousin and I watched in pain as my other cousin was dropped off to see Heep and Manfred Mann at the Dome arena in Rochester NY. First, the author here has better knowledge of releases that follow Conquest which I liked but didn't sound like Heep . Chris Slade btw...Manfred Mann connection. I listened to some releases that followed and appreciated some of them but quit purchasing. I am more of a traditional Heep fan. I am in agreement with Look At Yourself as #1, Wizards #2. I actually like Sweet Freedom and the 1st LP better than Magicians Birthday. I like Return to Fantasy (Title, Beautiful Dream, Devil's Daughter, Why Did You Go and A Year And A Day all honorable mentions) and Wonderworld (Dreams, Shadows and the Wind, I Won't Mind, Suicidal Man, Something or Nothing, The Easy Road even So Tired...all great. I can'tbelieve he rated this classic period gem where he did. OUCH!) better than Salisbury ( however I always loved the creepy American cover which in tone and art complimented the first lp cover of the American release. The Park, Lady In Black and Salisbury are all great.). I like Firely (Hanging Tree, Been Away Too Long,, Rollin' On, Sympathy) and Innocent Victim (Illussion, Choices). I probably like Firefly in it's entirety more than Salisbury. Fallen Angel I didn't like at all, a hard listen for me as their sound was changing to something totally different. I got rid of it....sounded like they were hunting for poppy hits. I like High and Mighty (Footprints In the Snow and Weep in Silence, which aren't mentioned, as good as anything off Victim and Firefly but the rest not as much as those two.) Abominog or whatever it's called I bought it and got rid of it. To me I thought they were trying to sound and portray that image of METAL that was happening at the time. That Devil metal (Sell Your Soul). Didn't remind me of the heaviness (Dreamare, Tears In My Eyes, Gypsy) or beauty (July Morning, Circle of Hands, The Wizard) that I related to Heep. Funny I kept Conquest though. Very different but creative and good. The Author made no mention Byron's stint in Rough Diamond. A great post Heep LP with Humble Pie guitarist Clem Clempson who Later played with Jack Bruce. End of the Line is an incredible song. His review was entertaining. Made me want to go out and re-familiarize myself with the later releases. I know there's amazing stuff in them.

There is one song on Firefly that rates right up there in the top 3 or 4 Uriah Heep songs of all time for me. "Been Away Too Long" has all the best aspects of a Heep song. Lots of variation in dynamics, great guitar solo & guitar work in general, great driving drumming, soaring vocals, tasty keyboard (synth). But most of all - stunning classy songwriting from Ken Hensley. If you are not moved by this song - something is wrong.

I don't like Conquest as much as you (it would be near the bottom for me) and Abominog would be top 5 for me (mainly for personal/nostalgic reasons), but the rest are very close to my ranking. Wake The Sleeper is a bit higher for me, as well. That one surprised me when I first heard it.

Thanks for watching and commenting. If I redid this list I think I would move Conquest to the bottom. I would also put the new album LIVING THE DREAM around the #10 spot. I love Abominog to death, it's awesome. I have been digging into Peter Goalby's work with Trapeze and Fable and think very highly of him. He was the first Rock n' Roll singer I ever saw live.

18. See of Light, 1995. Dang, 8f these are the worst, my gosh I'm in for a long journey and a real treat. I can't wait to hear what you consider their best. Let me guess. Wizards and Magicians?

I love High and Mighty too. Great songs. Don’t like “Can’t keep a good band Down”, it the rest of the album is an A+. Wetton is great on this one.

Thank you for clearing something up for me--the different tracks on the first two albums. I wish you had gone into it more though. I owned the U.S. versions and have always thought Bird Of Prey was from their first. High Priestess was the opener on my copy of Salisbury, not Bird Of Prey. Having BOP on the first made it just that much stronger for me. I disagree about Come Away Melinda. I was a mellotron freak back in the day and to my knowledge that is the only UH track on which is was ever employed. For me the song represents David Byron at his best and presents yet another style on the album. According to Mick Box they wanted to continue in the spirt of Spice which was so-named because they did not want to be pegged into any specific niche. I never knew about the co-writer Hensley had for a time. His name is only given as "Williams" on wikipedia's discography. Can you tell me anything about that? Thanks again for a great video.
@vinyltransmission4 жыл бұрын
Jack Williams is the guys name and he has a few songwriting credits over the years with different folks. I may have read an interview at some point about why he was involved but don't remember. Might have been a record company request to branch out. www.discogs.com/artist/1485469-Jack-Williams-4

Saw them on their 40th anniversary tour in Melbourne around 2011, awesome version of Paradise/The Spell. Love all the Byron albums ( High And Mighty is a bit dodgy) after that I lost interest although their last couple of albums are topnotch.

Thanks for shearing this. I kinda "met" UH's music in the 1970s and never let it slip. But I did loose some interest in the band after the Ken Hensley era. In respect Byron was a great singer and Thain was a magic bassplayer, but it always comes back to the songwriting. And the songwriting didn't stay on the same level after Ken Hensley left. On the other side Ken had a enormous production of great song afterwards.
@Digmen12 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that. As a fan of their in the 1970's I used to play many of their albums in my car. But like all British rock bands of the 70's their first 4 or 5 albums are the best - the rest are really just fillers. I could not tell you any of the songs from the 80's oinwards. But yes Mick Box is a legend and Ken Hensley was so talented

I have some disagreement with your list, but as a whole you are ok. Please note that Manfred Mann is not the only connection - Chris Slade was MMEB's drummer for a long time, and an amazing one as well. Also with Jimmy Page and Paul Rodgers (The Firm). Slade was fantastic with the Heep, saw him with Sloman and Bolder. They were great, a show to remember and cherish till I'm done.

Thanks for watching and commenting. That is so cool you saw the line up with Chris Slade and John Sloman! I recently picked up an old Kerrang magazine and learned there was a singer between Sloman and Bernie Shaw, named Stef Fontaine who toured with the band but never recorded. Cheers!

Uriah Heep has one of the most diverse music catalogs of any band you could name and as a result, there is music to both love and hate, depending on your taste.....I'm disappointed that Wonderworld and ANY of the Goalby-era records ranked so low....I would rank Conquest and Salisbury as the very lowest and you accurately ranked most of the post-Goalby era records pretty low....I like Sea of Light and Sonic Origami and Living the Dream is okay, but I think all the Albums from the Hensley era except Conquest and Salisbury belong at the top of the list, Followed by the Goalby/Sinclair/Daisley era stuff and then everything else....

I hate anything Uriah Heep did after Lee Kerslake and Trevor Bolder left but I just love anything came before except for Equator (Night of the wolf is anyway a nice song). What is their single best record is almost impossible to say...

Thanks for watching and commenting. I just saw the band a few nights ago and although I'll admit they are not in their prime, I can tell you they left the crowd completely satisfied. The great songs from the Classic Era people will always love to hear.

Interesting list, nice to do the brief commentary/trivia item for each album. Been a Heep fan forever, saw them for the first time in 1977 on the Firefly tour. I've seen them four or five more times since then. The opening band was Foreigner, on their first American tour. Great job overall. Others have pointed out the minor errors, but it was definitely a worthwhile watch.
@vinyltransmission5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and commenting, Jim! That Firefly tour sounds like a killer double bill. I recently picked up Uriah Heep Live in 1979 which is a great set with John Lawton. And have my ticket to see UH open for Judas Priest in June! 'Appy Days!

Nobody agrees on anything. But I don't agree Equator or Head First being worse than the awful Different World. What a piece of crap. And this is not to let you down for making the video. Really appreciated your honesty.
@vinyltransmission6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and commenting. Looking forward to Heep's new album "Living The Dream" being released in September 2018. Since making this video I like Equator a lot more than I did, love Peter Goalby's singing.
@cbFIN6 жыл бұрын
Pete Goalby's voice and singing was incredible, he really carried melody. As you said, the lyrics were cheesy and crashed heavily with their own appearance. Skool's Burning in particular. Mick Box was 38 during Equator and looked older then than what I saw him last night on stage here in Finland. Even with the grey hair! They mentioned the new album coming out. With their form last night, I think it could be alright.

I really like Wonderland but most people don’t talk that highly of it. I don’t know why. My least favourite is probably Sonic Origami, it just never really clicked with me for some reason. Magicians Birthday is a little overrated too, just my opinion, I actually prefer Very Eavy which is probably in the top 3 for me along with Sweet Freedom. I would have Outsider and Sea Of Light higher. My favourite is Look At Yourself. Glad you had Fallen Angel so high, it is underrated. Great video
