Back in 1977 I was in the Army stationed in Germany. While on leave visiting my cousin, she told me I HAD to check out Uriah Heep. So, as soon as I returned to Germany, I found the next concert available near me and went to see Uriah Heep for the first time. I fell in love. Although I loved all the songs, this one really grabbed me and has not let me go since. I went on to collect all the albums and saw them in concert 3 more times (2 more in Germany and once in San Diego after I got out of the Army).

I think Lady in Black was re-released in Germany in 1977 (Originally released in 1970) and was a huge hit there going #1 for many weeks.

So, let me touch on a few points. First, this is not only my favorite Uriah Heep song (and that's saying something) but my favorite song (and that's saying even more)! Second, one of the things about Ken Hensley's writing is that it is truly timeless! That term is thrown around often but with this song, it actually applies! I can imagine it being sung by a traveling minstrel of the middle ages, by a bard in ancient, pre-Roman Britain, as piece of the late 19th century, or as a progressive rock piece of the early 70s (which of course, it was)! Third, Hensley loved to use irony in his lyrics and this song is no exception! The protagonist names as his foe, "The need within some men to fight and kill their brothers without thought of love or God" and then, asks for horses "to trample down my enemies!" She sees right through that nonsense! I could teach a master class on this song!

Since I heard this song for the first time in 1972 at the age of 11 (Album Salisbury), when the daily news were full of crime, war (Vietnam), terrorism and racism, I always thought, Ken wrote this song about "Mother Earth in Grief" (Lady In Black), but there were so many different explanations about this song, so I'm not sure, what's really meant by Ken's lyrics. But as so many great UH-songs I always will love this song too :)

Да “в тылу” - ру. sorry, бараны (86%?) терпеливо топают на пукинскую скотобойню (пу. РАЙ), ГУЛАГ 2.0 или Улус Китая… НЕ до веселья - ИМ... Царство Небесное ВСЕМ СЛАВЯНАМ, сгинувшим за хотелки сЦаря и его воровскую лживую власть, УНИЧТОЖАЮЩИХ Россию и ГРОБящих её НАРОД… Аминь.
