One of the greatest rock bands on the Earth. My first concert was August 14th 1974. I was in 8th grade. My buddy John was a Gary Thain freak. The opening band was 3 guys from Canada.... They didn't even turn the lights down for them.... Who knew..... Next up.... Manfred Mann...... And the headliner.......the awesome Uriah Heep. When they hit the stage..... The roof of the Civic Arena opened up......And at that moment..... A memory was created that will last 1000 lifetimes.... Rock on people

I was in the front row of a 1976 Heep performance a couple months prior to this one. Byron had an identical white scarf around his neck and he tossed it into the audience. I caught it. Then he asked me to give it back to him. No way David!

RIP Ken Hensley, who I heard died today. I found out this sad fact as I looked up these lads in response to seeing this video online, after a man I know with the surname "Lorraine" was elected to local office. Funny how these algorithms work. Lovely man and artist, Ken Hensley. This particular number was played at too fast a tempo in my opinion. But that doesn't take anything seriously away from the Heep legacy.

Such a terrific band in their time, and this video is classic stuff. However, it's a bit sad to see David Byron on his spiral to self-destruction, especially so soon after the Thain crash.
@thunderdeed1

From what I read the band's record sales were down, problems with management, and inner turmoils with the band. And David couldn't cope with it and found "solace in the bottle ". The band didn't seem to mind when there was no shows but you start to get drunk before going on and of course performances were affected by that. Sadly Ken gave the ultimatum either he goes or I go. Gerry Bron has said it was a very hard dilemma but they made a decision and he has said it was a very poor decision.

From about 4:03 to 4:30 - massively awesome Hammond with guitar wah wah going on. I miss Ken Hensley. He was the other voice of Heep, a fine singer in his own right and a fantastic song writer and bottle neck guitarist. (I always wanted his hair!) I saw parts of his reunion with Heep, but he did not sing. I hope his voice is okay. Can anyone recommend his latter day albums, The Last Dance or Cold Autumn Sunday?

knowing a very special person whose name is Lorraine, this song got my atttention to "Uriah Heep' and "Magician's Birthday albumn. Someone needs to fire the tech, David Byron's voice is fantastic, so why does his mic suck! It isn't raining! Kenslake's drum's merge into a single sound, amazing and ferocious temp with the cymbol/drum melody. Ken Hensly's signature synthisieer is otherworldly awesome! and anyone that says different doesn't know music.

At around two minutes, the roadie runs out and adjusts the mike in front of the amps. After that point, the audio sounds clearer. The mike must have been moved/kicked earlier which could account for the uneven mix at the start.

hey, PVR! let's toast some marshmallows over that fire :) can never get enough of that! i doubt that anyone participating in this performance remembers being there anyway, so, in the end probably not even worth discussing/debating. as we all know, John toured with ROXY (and solo Ferry). he even made a few promo vids with them. Viva! Roxy! at any rate, i'm sticking to my guns in believing that JW was more a 'member' of ROXY than he ever was whilst in Heep. but clearly, the Crimson King reigns!

René Dehue We'll just have to disagree on that. Wetton's playing in King Crimson was ground breaking. Not at the Jeff Berlin or Jaco level, but he covered a lot of ground, was very dynamic and successfully took on more challenging music. If you want to hear Wetton at his best, listen to Starless and Bible Black (especially side two). That said, I learned a lot from Thain too. He was kinda the Jaco of rock. Of the straight ahead rock bands, he was far and away the most skilled bassist.
@zoltan1215

There are many great bass players, but Gary was super special whatever he did it was driving, melodic, had a certain sense of timing, and fit the music perfectly. Up to now nobody could replace him. If I was Mick I wouldn't let anyone in the band unless they learned Gary's parts note-for-note without that the music that we know loses it's magic. Again, nothing against other great bass players, but it's like singing different words, and melodies for a well known song. It wouldn't fly. Gary's notes are the melody and words all in one.

To be fair to Wetton, after dealing with Robert Fripp for several years he probably just wanted to have some fun. Too bad that the only other musician on the stage who seems to want to interact with him is Byron; Ken Hensley's expression is just poisonous throughout this, and Mick Box looks like he's trying to remember if he shut off the gas before he left the house.

I mean,he looks great here and does a fantastic job. I went to see them in Des Moines,Iowa later in 1976 and David was already gone. They opened for Kiss,and sadly,got booed constantly although,I loved it.

They should have called it a day when they fired Gary Thain. He gave them a whole other level musically and vibe-wise. They *swung* like crazy with Gary on bass--and can you imagine him letting Dave crawl between his legs looking like a bricklayer in drag the way Mick does? This band had a classic lineup ('71 - early '75) and aside from that they are nothing special, I'm afraid. Gary Thain RiP
