Great song, and one of the reasons why Salisbury is my favourite Uriah Heep album.

Great analysis of a great song It really says something about Heep, who were known for doing the heavy stuff, and then they go and do something so sensitive and heart-felt. Salisbury, such a wonderful album. They were just getting started too. A fan here since 1970. (USA)

I love Uriah Heep because of their unique heavy stuff like "Bird of Prey" , especially "Gypsy" - what was the first song I ever heard of them and immediately was fascinated by - and some other songs on one side and their very melodic songs on the other side. I appreciate musicians with a wide musical range. Among all their songs I like this one stands out a bit and from the first moment was - and still is - one of my favorite Uriah Heep songs. Just because of everything.

Everything’s beautiful, serene and bam, looking backward, so sad. Enjoyed it in a thoughtful way. This one is going on my Spooner Bar mix.

The middle section reminds of 60s-era Deep Purple. They did an instrumental on their second album called "Wring That Neck" that you should check out.

I love how soft and melodic this song is. I don't really know music from Uriah Heep, and I don't know why but I had expected something much harder for some reason. Lovely song!

I like the surreal feel of this song. The harpsichord with the falsetto is unique. The Hanging Tree is another great song in a similar vein.

I was lucky enough to have seen them for the Third time last month on the same Bill as Saxon and Judas Priest. A fantastic gig.

Almost up there (in bias terms) with The Cure - in that I can't listen without their Image invading my personal space. However, the cover artworks of Wonderland and Very Eavy Very Umble have always been with my childhood perceptions, which is why I'm glad I listened to this. It's subtlety surprised me. "Never judge stuff by it's appearance" it is then.

I don’t know if you have made a reaction to either of two other songs that they do yet but they are called ( Stealin , or Easy Living ) ? They are both Great Songs from their Catalogue of music !

I love Heep's early work, much like Deep Purple's first 3 albums. The sentiment of this song is much like the Pete Seeger songs 'Where Have All the Flowers Gone?'. It's been covered by many people, try Peter, Paul & Mary's version or The Kingston Trio. Seeger's early version lacks 2 verses added later.

Until I watched them live I didn't realise how much Hensley doubled Byron vocals...... Have you done High Priestess yet ???

The phrase ‘in vain belief’ gives a subtle foreshadowing of the later lyrics to me. Powerful analysis though!

They continue to be a band I would like to like more than I do because it's obvious there's a lot of talent and creativity in the band. I think maybe it's an overall lack of aggression about the band. They might be a little bit too nice.

Boy, does this song get stuck in my head. With the baroque touch and extreme falsetto it is a bit camp, but...I love it. My favourite on the album.

Always loved this song. You've been doing the U.K. release of this album. I'm really hoping that you go back and listen to "High Priestess", the first song on the U.S. version. You jumped around on this album rather than going from beginning to end in order, so it wouldn't interupt the "flow" or anything. LOL!

I like the solemn, collected aspect of this piece, which is not even disturbed by its jazzy interplay. It's my favourite track on the album, along with its epic title track of course!

Given the times, this might have a "Vietnam angle"? That's how I've always assumed it's meant - just because anti-war was an implicitly Vietnam-directed popular theme at the time. (As far as who was right and wrong back then, my personal opinion is that just about everyone's history of it is trash today, and we have to wait for more sound minded people to be born one day who don't take the events of our times any more personally than we do the events of the Mongolian invasions of the Middle Ages, or some Stone Age war between peoples whose very names no longer exist. With a pinch of salt, the war songs are great, and the general sentiment is a good one, but chugged with an extra tot glass of peppermint liqueur down at the bottom of the glass, is taking them a bit too far.)
