UTI (Urinary tract infection ) may present as frequent or painful urination, inability to hold urine (urgency), incontinence of urine (leaking urine), cloudy, smelly, stinky or blood stained urine, pain in lower abdomen, fever, tiredness or lethargy. In this video, we discuss the common causes of UTI and its symptoms. We talk about how to prevent recurrent UTI and treat it.
Good hygiene, good sexual practices , control of blood sugar, avoidance of douches and spermicides help to prevent UTI. If you have UTI after menopause, vaginal estrogens are likely to be helpful.
Untreated UTI can infect the kidneys, causing high fever and kidney scarring, which could lead to kidney failure in later life.
