Yes I remember working in the sound studio on the beautiful campus designed around the games. Tim Larkin is such a gifted composer and musician. Thanks for posting! (vocals for D'ni-The Great Tree)

Oh, you did the vocals for that? Do you know who did the vocals for the Kadish Gallery area? Good job, by the way.

This series has had numerous composers, but I think the shared goal of all of them has been to be as transportive and awe-inspiring as the games are. I first "played" the original Myst when I was 3, and the series has been a constant companion to me ever since. The Great Tree is a huge part of the cosmology of the games; a view of an infinite multiverse that reminds the writers of Ages that they are not creating the worlds they write of, just reaching out to something already there. This is the core of the games' sense of morality; it's, uh, probably false. But it's beautiful, and it represents the good the people in these gaves strive for. The moment in Uru where the idea is fully expounded to you, where you understand what kept the godlike powers of the people of D'ni in check, made them focus on Discovering instead of Ruling, is one of the most intense and moving in all the series. And your voice is such an integral part of that. It suggests that, confronted with the infinity of existance, the only thing you can do is sing back to the music of the spheres in appreciation. I will remember that moment forever. You made it happen. I just thought you should know.

@@kalimaude3532 Wow Kali, thank you for sharing this memory. I was really only a small part of making that happen (The Miller brothers, game designers, Tim Larkin) but you have an amazing interpretation. Much of singing is an act of thankfulness and humility to be sure.

@Morgan Allen That's very true! There is some suggestion of Observational Shenanigans, such as the big Moiety knife in Riven; when it was written into the book, the link changed to be one to a world where it was always there and had just now crashed down. But that doesn't really add up at all, and I think the fantastic truth of it is that the Great Tree concept is incorrect. They do indeed create and substantially alter the Ages they write. But every time in D'ni history that someone has chosen to interpret Writing as a divine power instead of a form of exploration, it has ended in catastrophic destruction. Gehn is the most obvious example, but the entire D'ni society imploded over that belief. Sirrus and Achenar never even learned how to Write, and wreaked untold havoc through their sense of grandeur. I think Atrus is smart enough to know that as well. Which makes the Great Tree as he applies it more of a philosophy than a belief. Acting like you don't have godlike power makes you more responsible with it than accepting that you do.
@kalimaude35322 жыл бұрын
@Morgan Allen Honestly, now that you mention it, the Tree Of Ages idea is basically the D'ni philosophy of collectively accepting the role of Demiurge. These worlds exist; we hold great power over them, and can change them to suit our needs, but we did NOT make them and it is important that we respect their existence. The Millers put an enormous amount of time and care into examining the implications of the cosmology, from the obvious in Gehn to the books, where Katran creates a completely impossible age just by not knowing that it wasn't possible. The idea that it was intentional that a major theme of the events was, effectively, knowing the Demiurge on a personal basis and being sent in like an archon to smooth out their mistakes sounds pretty solid to me. Atrus held off on teaching the age to his sons, yeah. He'd been taught Writing the slapdash backdoor way offered by Gehn, who had himself been half-taught during the final days of the D'ni, so it seems likely he just had no idea if it was wise. He started trying in Exile, with J'nanin and the associated Ages being entirely focused around explaning the D'ni language's concept focus; the word "balance" is not just a word, it is a platonic ideal with the power to actively shape an entire realm. But by that time they were up to their hilarious shenanigans. And on my end, I am getting to talk about the fictional constraints of playing god with someone, concerning a setting that being first exposed to is literally one of my earliest stable memories. So here we are! I like it here.

The soundtracks of the whole Myst series really takes me back to those nights when I stayed up to play these games in the dark of night, with headphones and a tiny light. These were the times when game play beyond point and click was just beginning to take over. I never liked the shoot up games (other than 80's arcade). I want to binge play the whole series again, someday...

Fall of D'ni 55:10 always hits particularly hard for me in a similar way because of one of the spots it always plays: a small little pub in D'ni hidden off to the side, carved into the rock (close to where I have pictured). The light is dim and all you see are broken stone tables, chairs, and the bar. There's nothing to do there, just you and the sleeping stone. I think we all know a place where we can stand alone and experience the same feeling.

I love this game. The music, the atmospheres, the story. It is one of my favorites. Sadly, i have never finished it completely. I finished the main part (with much help from hint guides) but have never been able to solve The Path of The Shell. Anyway, thank you for sharing, this makes great background music to listen to while working.!

I just started playing this recently, and I was struck by how engrossing the Cleft environment is even in it's simplicity. It grabbed me for a while but then after you finish that first environment I think the game struggles to find a progression in it's weird otherworldly visuals. The Cleft worked because it starts out looking desolate and mundane, but slowly reveals more about the people living there as you explore. The other environments tend to look otherworldly from the get go which is fine, but I never felt there was a satisfying gradual reveal of the world as I did with the Cleft.

I only ever played basically the main area, got somewhat into that cave that you first go into and that's it. Downloaded it recently and hope it runs on Windows 10. Thanks for the soundtrack. Myst, Riven, and this game have great soundtracks. I guess Myst 3 4 and 5 are probably pretty good too.

I love Exile and Revelations. End of Ages (Myst 5) lost a bit of the adventure and wonder of the series in both the game and the soundtrack, in my opinion.
@YoMilbert2 жыл бұрын
@@Acrosurge Wall's Exile and Revelations are both excellent I agree, though I think Exile better captured the otherworldly and exotic feeling (Theme from Amateria being my fave). Revelations' ambience and the vocal tracks were thrilling to say the least though. End of Ages while playing through the game felt a lot more quiet as I remember, but I also remember that feeling almost appropriate. It was the last page of the journey after all.

I don't think "00:13:52 D'ni - Spy Room (Baron's Theme)" is actually located in D'ni. This may not be the Spy Room. I think that name might belong to "00:16:59," meaning you have Spy Room and Baron's office names reversed.
@YoMilbert Жыл бұрын
I appreciate the investigation. "D'ni - Spy Room (Baron's Theme)" plays in both the Teledahn office pictured and the Spy Room room connected via tablet. I took all the pictures myself and used the Teledahn office to show an additional location, so I can see the confusion. Baron's Office is correct as well, I just launched the game to double check these.
