I bought an XS850 in 1982 and enjoyed it for 10 years. The sounds of the transmission shifting, the muffler sound during acceleration all come back to me listening to your bike. Thanks for the memories!

I am looking for another one of these. I still can't believe I sold my first one. Great riding bike, simple dependable and sounds great

Love these old UJM's. They are not so overwhelmingly powerful that learning on them is impossible. Unless you are a racer on a track, or just in a dick measuring contest, they make more than enough usable power for any sane rider.

Great road. Also good to see you staying at a sensible speed on that. Ground clearance was not something these had in abundance. If you keep the bike within the limits of where it's comfortable, then it's always an enjoyable ride. Ask it to go at a pace where it struggles - then you find yourself ( and your nice original bike ), off in the rhubarb somewhere.

The XS850 is a bike I always lusted after (along with the Honda V45 Sabre) Ironically next week I pick up 3 cylinder Yamaha...a Tracer 9 GT, a bike that is, in many ways, the spiritual successor to the XS850.

Thx for this vid. Try clubman bars out, they're fun on an xs850. Ever catch a peg leaning?

Very cool bike, I just got my endorsement and there is one near me on CL for $1000 I am thinking about buying it. Would this be a good first bike? Or is it a bit much?

William Whitacre compared to the motorcycle I learned on the XS850 is heavier than that but the bike I learned on was a lot smaller in engine size. I hadn’t ridden motorcycles before I took my classes and they provided a bike to learn on. If you’ve ridden before, you might not have any problem with the XS850. I do think it is a very fun bike to ride.
