US-90, Huey P. Long Bridge (toward Westbank)

The Huey P. Long Bridge is one of the oldest bridges over the Mississippi River, originally built in 1935. The original road bridge was only 4 (2 + 2) lanes wide, and each lane was only 9 feet across (rather than the 12-foot standard). In 2006, the DOTD started a 7-year project to rebuild the road bridge, expanding it to 6 (3 + 3) lanes, widening each lane to 12 feet, adding wide right shoulders, and splitting traffic to allow for bypassing 2 red lights (one at each end). The project finished in 2013 and cost nearly $450 million.

Anyone crossing this bridge, will remember it. I cross many times in the 90's. When you went down there be a sharp turn to the left. The other side had a stop sign so you had to stop.

Oh yeah, the old Huey P. Long Bridge was so narrow and dangerous! I'm glad the DOTD upgraded the bridge in 2013!
