Another thought. Lithium Ion batteries are light and the most energy dense. However it is illegal to transport them by air on commercial airlines. How about all the fires we have seen caused by Lithium Ion batteries. Not a good feature when flying at thousands of feet.

Gasoline has 100X the energy density of a Li-Ion battery. In practical terms, that means a 737's range would be 31.6mi instead of 3160mi. That would be 90 stops for a flight from NYC to LAX.

I am very much in favor of new technology and innovation. There is a place for any or all electric vehicles. However electric has a big short coming, energy density. Battery technology does not have an even close energy density to carbon based fuels. Energy density in batteries will continue to improve but in my view it will be many years before it approaches that of carbon based fuels. So for a very long time there will be a market need for both. Unless great detail to safety and backup systems are payed attention to a single fuse could down an aircraft. As a former military person and an Electronic Engineering Technician, in a combat situation a fast recharge will still need to be accomplished by carbon based fuel generators mitigating the zero emission aspect. I should suggest helical toroidal propellers which would increase efficiency by about twenty percent. Keep moving ahead this is impressive technology.
@hanswallner2188
@hanswallner2188 2 ай бұрын
You need much less energy in an electric aircraft, even todays lithium ion batteries are able to provide around one hour of flight time for electric aircraft, there are already certified electric planes out there, and they have 10 year old battery technology. As right now energy density goes up by the month, in the very near future flight times around 2 hours will be possible, which is more than enough for many tasks (short range passenger flights, emergency services, package delivery...) electric aircraft will have tremendously reduced costs per flighttime, as all the hot section engine problems go away, electric motors do not need regular maintenance, cost reduction will be HUGE !
@kf7bws
@kf7bws 2 ай бұрын
@@hanswallner2188 Lift is determined by the shape and size of the wings. Pound for pound it takes the same amount of energy to get identical panes in the air regardless of whether it is fossil fuels or electric. "You need much less energy in an electric aircraft," is not true. Getting an aircraft in the air is not the issue maintaining flight is the issue. As you stated "lithium ion batteries are able to provide around one hour of flight time" fossil fuels have a much higher energy density, meaning they can stay in the air longer. Someday it may be a reality that we will have long range electric flight, it is not today.

The dream of flying cars always amuses me. While generation of lift is done with propellers of any shape or form, the noise will render the concept a non-starter. We've had 3 helicopters ferrying tourists to see a local volcano when it is active and they fly over the capital every 30 minutes or so. Just 3 of them are driving everyone nuts here. They are small 4-6 passenger light helicopters. Also consider the limits set on drone flights because the sound they make bothers people at tourist attractions (not to mention hazard of falling onto someone). All videos trying to present flying "cars" as a good idea always cut out the sound and play some gentle music instead. These things would be crazy loud if you consider they are just really big drones.

interesting design but they should build a military version that runs on kerosene. Would have better power density.

also mass. When an airplane takes off at full fuel load it weighs 400k extra pounds due to fuel, but it lands close to empty. no matter how far you fly those batteries arent getting lighter.

Batteries just dont have the energy density. However, if you beam the power onto the craft from a C-band maser it changes the game. The best fuel is no fuel. The best battery is no battery.😁

Hydrogen has already superseded this short range technology. Recharge time of a pure Battery powered vehicle is killing this tech for the military.

Petrol has 100X the energy density of a Li-Ion battery. A 737's range would be 31.6mi instead of 3160mi. That would be 90 stops for a flight from NYC to LAX.

While it is obvious that electric flight will not work on long range, but works excellent and cheap on short range your comment is nonsense, pure energy density is just one factor, there are lots of others, engine efficiency is at least double in electric motors, then consider approach or taxiing, where a gas turbine still draws 50% of fuel consumption while an electrical aircraft would taxi with 1 or 2 percent power and would even produce power on approach by recouperation as EVs do. With todays usually marketed batteries electric aircraft with range of about 200 miles is absolutely possible, and there are several electric planes flying.

@@hanneslimbach2505 Nonsense? I design and build these battery systems. My comment merely tempers the hype and shows how far we have to go. If math bothers you, that's your issue. No one said there was no market, just a long road ahead for those of us who dream of electric flying cars in our driveways.
