US customs is rejecting spice shipments by MDH for contamination | Faye D'Souza

Indian spice brands MDH and Everest Masala are under the scanner in Hong Kong and Singapore because their products contain a chemical which can cause cancer. New reports say US customs has been rejecting MDH products for contamination as well. Faye explains the controversy.

It’s not politics. It’s disregard for rules, safety and hygiene. It’s ingrained in our culture. In all of us. When we don’t stop at a red signal. When we pay a bribe for not wearing the seat belt. When we don’t wear a seatbelt. When we get up from the seat as soon as the plane touches the ground. It’s not the govt. we are the govt in a democracy. It’s what we value as a society.

MDH is banned in all south Asian countries and East Asian countries..( China, Vietnam, Laos, S.Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore have all banned these products)

Don't Indian Lives Matter? Does the Food Safety & Standards Authority of India, FSSAI, have the wherewithal to test the millions of Food products we have on our supermarket shelves? Aren't "after expiry date" Food and medications still sold in the market? This should be a wake-up call for putting into place world class testing protocols.

Literally everything nowadays is FSSAI approved , it lost its credibility long back ... In india If you have contacts & can slide money under the table everything becomes legal .... Driving licences is the best example

Sadly Indian lives do not matter to Governments. If they did there would not be a deal with Israel to send Indian citizens to a war zone to compensate for the cheap Palestinian labour becoz of the War. Not ethyl oxide but ethylene oxide (has a double bond in the structure unlike the lack of valence electrons in Ethyl oxide). Once consumed, the double bond in Ethylene oxide can be easily broken and generate free radicals that can lead to oxidative stress in the body and increase the risk of hypermutation in cells and carcinogenesis.

Am an Indian living in the UK and used to buy this MDH packets. Indian quality has never been a priority no matter what laws are in place Implementation is ignored. 3 Trillion economy can only be achieved through export and who would want to buy unsafe food or any products in the West. Even today my relatives always prefer to buy the same products outside India even though they are cheaper in India. Subservient quality.

Yes got some fish from Bangladesh which tasted like mud so I threw it out. Do not buy Chinese food or fish too in the UK. Always dodgy. Japanese is better expensive but worth it.

Even with checks they bribe officials. Alphonso mangoes one year were banned by the EU. After much intervention EU agreed to take the harvest. Next year the same happened so after a second shipment and warning it was still ignored. Third year no Alphonso mangoes on any shelves in the UK. This was my experience before Brexit. Bribe culture in in our DNA. You can take an Indian to the moon but can't take the Indian out of them.

It may just not be feasible for FSSAI to quality control food products for the worlds most populated country. And, they have been caught before but the practices still continue. But I am not saying that we need to silently suffer. There has to be another solution or check in addition to FSSAI. How about severe punishments, instituted by lawmakers and prosecutors, if caught? The fear of punishment (like being driven out of business) should be high enough to be a deterrent...
