Because so many people overpaid for homes even while loan rates were low, I believe there will be a housing catastrophe because these people are in debt. If housing costs continue to drop and, for whatever reason, they can no longer afford the property and it goes into foreclosure, they have no equity since, even if they try to sell, they will not make any money. I believe that many individuals will experience this, especially given the impending mass layoffs and rapidly rising living expenses.

What were the Rumsfelds and Cheneys of the world thinking when they invaded Afghanistan and Iraq to the tune of $8 Trillion? Now we have Rumsfeld and Cheney wannabes who want to continue on the same path and spend another $8 Trillion on Gaza, Ukraine and Taiwan. Can this kind of lifestyle be sustained as a country? Maybe I’m ignorant, but can someone please tell me where all that money came from?
@antonywooster6783
@antonywooster6783 4 ай бұрын
Of course it came from the work of working people. That is the only place it can come from. I mean, think about it. Everything of value is made by someone working. (Even finding things is work and robots were made by somebody.) Money does NOT make money, though it may enable you to get money off someone else. The other point of confusion is that money" and "value" are two different things, though often confused. For example, I have a frying pan, say, it is valueable to me as a tool to help me fry things. If the price of frying pans in the shops goes up or down, it does not affect the value of the frying pan to me. It is still, exactly as useful, as valuable, to me as it was before the monetary price changed. Money is "worth" what it will buy. The things and services it can buy are all made by people working. So money's worth, the value of money, depends on peoples' work. However tortuous, the route that the money and hence the value takes the sourece of the value of the money, is always the same: peoples' work. I hope that answers your question.

The U.S. dollar has lost 96% of its value since 1913. In 1908 a 46-gram Hershey Bar cost 2 cents. Today a 43-gram Hershey Bar costs a $1.99 without tax. Some economic historians estimate the New York central bank has printed $1 quadrillion since 1913 and that the global debt is $320 trillion in principal and - at 3% interest - $9 trillion in interest which means - on average - each human being on this planet owes $10,500 annually in interest payments alone.

In the GFC house values fell by around 16% and caused a banking collapse. Today Commercial real estate does not have as high a total net worth as high as the housing stock of the USA, but its value has fallen by up to 90% ! This means that the total debt exposure levels to the banks is twice as great as it was in 2008 and the derivatives market is begining to show signs of distress.

Thailand's trends are also like the US. household debt so increased last few years. There are so many problems with debt - first credit card default, and second then auto loans. Now, we found that mortgages are defaulting in the first quarter of 2024 by significant. Our country just changed the minimum paid from 5 percent to 8 percent for the credit card this year. They found an increase in default. I'm an encouragement to everyone to get through the period of debt.
@katesisco
@katesisco 4 ай бұрын
The debt is not attached to home owners, it is to the Mom and Pop storefronts encouraged by the Gov. So the economy appears to be split into two groups, one of renter/occupier and house owners. This is why we are told by Gov that our economy is in good shape, then group that owns and the occupier. But are they actually connected? When the occupiers are unable to pay, the debt is local isn't it? This will cause local banks to fail. Those with mortgages that can be satisfied thru monthly income from gov programs or jobs will maintain but a large percentage of the rest will collapse. But how much the collapse will spread is unknown. It appears to depend upon how great the chasm is between the haves and the have nots.

What triggers a domino of falling debts. Banks are sitting on bad asset debts , which they flipped to a new loan to temporarily make that loan an asset. Aventually the debt service stops. The assets tumbles in value & a debt is unpaid. Banks are stacking up toxic debt in various ways until it all falls over. Consumers are being tapped out. Once they fail , recovery is very difficult. The car & the house are not worth what they thought it was. No savings, no options. You can see a massive firesale comming. Better to sell first than last. Buffet is stacking up 200 billion in cash waiting for the crash to buy distressed assets cheaply. I give it 5 months to clarify that people are falling over under the burden.

How can American keeps borrowing money to live forever?
@Jeffrey-rq2gq

Former Federal Reserve Fed Chair guaranteed Congress that it (money printing) could indeed go on forever. But the cost for doing so would be uncontrolled inflation. We are heading into the "uncontrolled inflation" period now. This is probably only the beginning. Never fear, the Federal Reserve Board still have tricks up their sleeves, none of them will benefit "We the People." Sad how little the public truly understands how the "money" system works.

Lena, thank you again for updating us on a situation that will have to correct itself one day. One solution is for the American consumer to start paying down their debt load. But if this happens, there will be less spending money for retail stores and mail order industries which will have a ripple effect on labor layoffs. This will cause labor layoffs on industries which re-supply the retail stores - which will cause layoffs in industries which supply the raw materials for these manufacturing industries. All these layoffs will compound themselves into other industries such as groceries, restaurants, autos, heath, etc. So we have : Household debt is increasing, government debt is increasing, corporate debt is increasing. Looks like the perfect storm is slowly building momentum.
