I think we should acknowledge the fact that abusing the system is not good for our image and will result to backlash and tough measures which will affect other innocent people. We can't claim to say Indians were abusing it before Nigerians when there are no statistics to back that claim. Check the Government of Canada website and look at the numbers of assylum claimants. Nigeria tops the list. How else do you want them to stop the inflow of assylum seekers when they can legitimately come to Canada legally. We should not be passing the blame, truth be told we as Nigerians need to redeem our image so these countries take us seriously. The Philippines is not as rich as Nigeria yet they have a human resource agreement with Canada to bring in temporary foreign workers every year and these people do not abuse the system. The Caribbeans are not as rich as Nigeria yet they have human resource agreement to bring in seasonal farm workers. Why do people from these countries have so much importance to Canada? They have succeeded in presenting a good image yet Nigerians in the diaspora who managed to escape the terrible situation from Nigeria will not behave themselves and respect the rules.

On the 13th of May, 2019, barely a day before the drop box visa application decision was made public and official, I was denied B1B2 visa in Bangkok Thailand as an international student going for a summer vac. The interview with the consular didn't take more than 2 minutes. She simply collected my passport with a surprise gesture on her face, smiled and said just a sec. She took my passport to another of her colleague briefly and came back with some mockery face which she tried so hard to hide, and said sorry I cannot issue you the visa... and she added you may pay another visa fees and apply again if you want to. I never felt so racially discriminated all my life! Just like that. I had all the legit documents and proof that I will come back to Bangkok to complete the last semester Master's Degree programme this September, and why would I diss my first class academic status and runaway to the states. I had wanted to tell my story but she quickly excused me. I felt really bad that she didn't give me even second to tell my story. I understand that I'm not entitled to the visa (although I had a bit of sense of entitlement given to my previous business and other engagements with the US government initiatives). I had in my possession award certificates given to me by the Secretary US Department of States for some important projects I had completed in the recent past for the US and for Nigeria. But I was denied the privilege to prove myself. It was hurting. Really hurting. But after a day or two I just had to let it go. Because I understand that under a normal circumstance, the outcome of the interview would have been different or favorable. Nigeria is to blame. It's simple. And it's the truth. We need to clear out our shit because we mess up both locally and internationally. The Nigeria passport is an exhibit too. Just know it today. The Nigeria passport is equal to useless on the international arena. It just bears some kind of signature that tells whoever sees you with it that you are a criminal or some kind of disease. That being said, I do not trust or appreciate some of the United States foreign or diplomatic policies. Like if the US is serious, they should out rightly ban the Nigeria politicians and other corrupt officials from the US for any personal business that has nothing to with official travels. Like coming to the states for medical check up or holidays or having their kids study in the states. These are few example of personal businesses. But can they do that? I doubt. It's just about the money. The US and their friends keep Africa and Nigeria in some kind of funny condition to enrich their economies... Ban all of from visiting and send our expatriates back home to fix our mess so that we don't have to have the need to travel for frivolous reasons...

Also the UK and US have started rolling out facial recognition cameras at the airports and on the streets. In some US airports, boarding passes are no longer required, they use your face instead. Think about the implications for people overstaying in a country. You have cameras unobtrusively comparing your face with data, that they hold on file, in real time and if you are an overstayer, recording the location where you were last seen, immediately dispatching law enforcement and arresting you for deportation.

@@mizzlynng Regardless of whether it's a good thing or not, the system is already being rolled out. In the context of an overstayer, you have already committed an immigration offence by not leaving on expiration of your visa so the authorities will have a right to detain you (read the small print of a visa). As more and more countries deploy these sorts of hi-tech methods to enforce their immigration controls and grow increasingly intolerant, it will become very difficult for people to emigrate (illegally or otherwise).

I came to Canada in 2009 as an international student. At my university there where a hand full of Nigerian students and the international student office at that time was really small. It was so small the office was located close to the food court on campus. When i graduated in 2015 there where a lot of Nigerians at the university. This was a really good time to be an international student at my university, fast forward to 2018, i went to the international student section of the school to gather some info for a secondary school mate. I was shocked when the international student representative for Nigerian told me that the Canadian govt. wants students from Nigeria to pay their full tuition for 1 year and show proof of 1 year funds for their upkeep and when the student present his/herself to a boarder agent they will ask to see the proof of funds. She further told me the reason was because some Nigerian students come to Canada on a student visa and don't have any intension to attend school. Most of them come with a different intension. My worry now is our people will cause problems with this stream, sooner or later the Canadian Govt will stop them from coming for studies. Thanks for your informative inputs on the situations that affects our people. I always enjoy watching them. There's always something to take away.

Agreed, Nigerians have behaved badly by overstaying it's the people that overstayed that should be punished not legitimate people that should be suffering for the wrongs of others. I tell you there are so many Nigerians who come to USA on student visa and in the first semester they drop out. They don't get do anything worthwhile to change their status. They live in this horrible state of Limbo. No papers, no degree, menial jobs. At some point you wonder what is the point of that type of life? Was the visa in itself a blessing or a curse? Apart from the amenities they enjoy in US like constant electricity, internet, and entertainment, what else are they benefiting. Living in the shadows, afraid of deportation, they can't progress in USA, and the longer they stay the dimmer their prospects are also getting in Nigeria. It is a horrible thing. Another thing that absolutely makes me mad is when people come here to give birth to children. An unearned citizenship. Yet they brag so much "My child is an American Citizen!" I am waiting for the government to completely put an end to that nonsense. The abuse is ridiculous. Phrankleen, abeg keep saying these things. I knew it was going to get to this stage. I have no concern about those crossing from the U.S into Canada, just know it's ILLEGAL!!!!. If you cross from the U.S into Canada with a valid and genuine U.S tourist Visa, trust me you're at risk. The U.S and Canada have an agreement that you can make a claim in either U.S or Canada boarder. ( Your first entry Country), The Safe Third Country Agreement means that if a person makes a refugee claim at a Canadian Port of Entry on the US-Canada border, they will be sent back to the US to claim there, unless they meet one of the limited exceptions in the Agreement.. The issue is that people crossing from the U.S into Canada, even when they're qualify for the Economic class Immigration (Federal and PNP). Why passing through that route? Some of them claiming they have kids back in Nigeria!. Again, i have no issue with those that needed this situation, but if you're can make it here through the economic class, with stable papers, why putting pressure on yourself? Even student's visa is now hard to get for legitimate students. We have 15 to 17 routes to Migrates into Canada, why making it so hard for those that don't have access to economic classes? I rest my case, again ; it just my opinion. Refugee refusal rate is now on the high side. Mind you, they have three to four Canadian Immigration officers from last year, stationed at the U.S embassy. They take records of those with Temporary U.S visa, if you eventually cross with that same visa or information! Trust me, you're on your own . Open your eyes and ask questions before crossing the line between the u.s and Canada.

In as much as I respect your viewpoint. I feel it is lacking a major factor. Nigeria has a population of over 200 million people while other countries compared have less than 1/4 of that. So for every 1 notorious person in Cameroon you probably have around 4 to 8 of Nigerians because of population. It’s not as of Nigerians are specially bad. Is the son suffering from the iniquity of the father? People are abusing the system, overstaying and giving birth without paying bills like you have alluded. Unfortunately, taxpayers are footing the bills. A lot of people are making the process more difficult for people who have legitimate reasons. Imagine Nigeria comes third in overstayed Visa. It is sad. So what do you expect. Besides the compression, the lawlessness in the American southern border is forcing the USA to cut Visas from other country. Do you know that people have been waiting for 5-10 years only for some entitled people to ruin it?
