Honestly that's the least of the plotholes in the film; start asking questions and the entire thing falls apart. I think the film works best if you try to think of it as like an old fairytale or parable where the message is more important than the story actually making sense. eg. Little Red Riding Hood; it shouldn't make sense that a wolf is able to secretly replace the grandma without anybody really noticing; but it is important to the message as the story was originally intended as a metaphor warning young girls to avoid rapists and pre-marital sex; both of which are represented by the wolf.

Jason is young and aside from burned face they seem very similar. If anything it shows how we are more of a product of nurture versus nature. Our surroundings and experiences/friends and direct family mold is into who we are. I for one believe in personal accountability and that choices define who we are ultimately and that even someone born into a bad situation can get themselves out with the know how and dedication. Although learning proper values can be difficult with parents who think they are victims and claim the same for you. Anyway this comment isn't about that though. I might know why Jason wears the mask. I think he is compelled to wear the mask because his connection with the tether is so strong he feels the need to cover his burned face, even though it is not his face that is burned. There's no Tether like behaviour though. The Tether just don't have the same upbringing. Because they lack certain opportunities they didn't have ability to talk and possibly even write however they are exactly like their counterparts. So it would reason that Tether like behaviour due to being birthed shouldn't matter. This is exemplified simply by the fact that Red took Adelaide's place and assimilates into the above world. So even if you were to argue that the children are half Tether, they aren't in the same situation as those below so it wouldn't affect their speech and behaviour.

I agree Pluto and Jason were switched before the movie took place. At the end he is looking at his mother wondering if it was safe for them with respect to their secret. Mom reassures son that it is OK and he put down his mask carries on as "normal". There are other clues, but in this scene it is all in the face. I hope to see an interview with Evan Alex some time in the future for clarity because he had to know the context of the scene in order to act it out.
