Lockheed was a very different animal when they produced all the Kelly Johnson and Ben Rich Birds. At that time, Lockheed California Company was where the magic happened, well before they acquired or merged with other aircraft manufacturers. ADP (Skunk Works) was where I worked during my time at Lockheed, so I can’t speak about the projects after the F117. Even in the late seventies, there were other examples of aircraft just as daring as the Have Blue.

X-44 Manta was an F-22 with no tail (3D thrust vectoring) & delta wings, much like the FB-22 (or A-22), a light bomber variety. That’s probably about where the similarities with the NGAD/PCA begin & end. There are now new materials, new engines, different formats or form factors adding payload & fuel capacities, enhanced sensors & aeronautics, computing capability & capacity (AI), & at some point soon, energy weapons/lasers, & drone swarm coordination & control & unitization integration; all open sourced for ease of upgrades & maintenance; all digitally designed & developed through iterations towards ultimate maturation of design functionality. What certainly started with the X-44 concept as an iteration past the F-22 basic model has progressed presumably light years ahead of F-22 pro 2.0. But now concurrent technology advances & enhancements might have made the whole concept of a manned fighter completely obsolete before the first production model could even be built (allegedly). (Maybe they built a small fleet in secret like the F-117 was built, just to counter the CCP J-20 fleet but are now curtailing or pausing production pending re-evaluation in light of Russia vs Ukraine lessons in modern air war - let’s hope so; all the other 6th Gen fighter programs seem to be hitting the pause buttons as well - so something surely is up right now.)
