Just bought this work bench yesterday, I was looking at videos for ideas or mods for this workbench. As I was watching your video, I was like, I've heard that voice before, and yeap I surely have. Turns out you've helped me a while back with one of your videos of how to setup a Wireless router as a repeater. Once again thank you for your videos, PS: I've been a subscriber of yours since that last time.✌️

I've been dealing with the face plates problem since the very beginning, I tried almost everything but nothing worked, I tried your fix and it worked flawlessly, now I have the perfect workbench: light, small, and with some serios vise clamping power. You should add ""fix, upgrade, mod or hack" to the title of this video, I'm sure most people using these workbenchs have the face plate problem.

Another sterling video Richard, i have the workmate heavy duty bought in 1981, these benches are one fantastic invention, the work mine has done is unbelievable, i really have abused mine with no problem. re the screwdriver do you have in the US Pozidrive & Phillips
@richardlloydusa
@richardlloydusa 9 жыл бұрын
+bmwnasher My old workbench most definitely does not owe me anything. The workmates are the premium workbench on the market and are virtually indestructible but that comes at a price. Obviously the price is worth it. Yours has lasted 34 years! Wow. You can't beat that value. The Phillips screwdriver appears to be the standard here. In Canada the Robertson and the Phillips are the standard. I like the Robertson because the screwdriver will hold the screw without being magnetized and it seems to be less likely to strip the head. Unfortunately it is not widely used here. Thanks again.
@bmwnasher
@bmwnasher 9 жыл бұрын
Richard Lloyd The modern ones here don`t look as sturdy, if they were Black & Decker would go bust. interesting about the screwdrivers, i like the Pozidrive for the same reason its a far superior hold, but i do hate them all, if the Phillips driver is a bit worn it`s curtains, ive got an impact driver you need one on some car stuff. Look forward to your next project.
@richardlloydusa
@richardlloydusa 9 жыл бұрын
+bmwnasher I buy the #2 Phillips screwdriver bits in ten packs because as you said once they wear they are next to useless and do more damage than good. I use impact drivers to remove nuts and bolts too but I only use a torque qrench to put them on. Working on my next video stay tuned. Thanks

THANK YOU! I am going to buy one and glue 5/8" plywood on the bottom of the boards. 2 Bolts, washers and locknuts by the handles like you did. Might not matter but I will look into 2 heavier duty side metal folding hinges or make my own out of thicker metal. Right now with the 20% off coupon I can buy one for $17.00. Menards has the Workmate for $29.00. For my uses, I can get away with Harbor Freight. However, one thing I have learned the hard way; UNBOX THE ITEM RIGHT AFTER YOU PURCHASE IT INSIDE THE STORE! Or if you can right in the parking lot. If anything is missing or bent, you can quickly replace it!!!! I did this last time for a router after wasting 2 trips! I unboxed it and tested it right there. The manager said that was smart thing to do.

Very instructional. I am in Colombia and options are very limited, The local big box store sells Redline brand which is exactly the same as this. I purchased mine for about $22 US. It was this one or the Worx Pegasus for $95 US. I used candle wax on the surface for the top supports to slide where you used grease. I expect to have to replace the MDF, but that is an easy task and will do the mod you suggested. Are you still using yours? Any more mods?

I'm still using mine and it's held up rather well. I screwed a solid larger piece of plywood on the two clamping wood strips to make a solid wood table. It still folds and it's much stronger. I use wood clamps or C clamps for anything I need to hold down to it. It's a very handy thing to have. Thank you so much for commenting, watching and the very kind words. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀

@@richardlloydusa I bought this mainly for the center vise. I do some hand planing on board edges and this works well. But i had a workbench top made of 2 1X8s and is 36 in long that I put a 1X4 on the bottom and use the vise to secure it to give a larger solid top. I bolted a 1X2 across the front legs that is about 1/4 in off the floor. It extends about 18 in out on either side. I can put my foot on it as a hold down and it is a lot more stable to tipping. I could possibly put something to reach the floor (like adjustable refrigerator feet) to ensure that it doesn't wobble later
@richardlloydusa
@richardlloydusa 2 жыл бұрын
Very good ideas. It could certainly use something to keep it stable if you are putting a lot of force on it. Thanks for sharing. All the best.

@@richardlloydusa I looked at a lot of videos and would much rather have one of the bigger B&D models. But the price is a lot more and Amazon shipping to Colombia for them was over $50 and this was my best option here. I don't do any heavy work and just small projects. So for a little over $20, I was not expecting a lot. I bought the Worx 4 1/2 in circular saw that I like a lot also (it had free shipping to Colombia)

This bench is still being sold and comes in handy. But there is one thing bothering me, and that is the flex it has when you hold something with the plastic grip thngis. The winged brackets holding the top are to blame. They are tall and so the lever created between metal base and grip is long. At 7:45 you can see that the moveable bracket is mounted at the middle hole. I enlarged the 'left' hole and mounted/screwed it there, this definitely helps because now the lever/surface of the bracket pushing back is larger. Ideally they should be replaced with something stiffer.
