The worst part is the statistics. I did some calculations and found something scary: You have about a 12% chance of experiencing a school shooting in your lifetime, and about 1.5% per year. This is if you live in God blessed country of the US of A Many people compare the odds of a shooter to the odds of winning the lottery. This should put it into perspective. Your odds of going through a school shooting in your life is the same as rolling 8 dice and getting the number 6 on all. Winning the lottery is like rolling 2 300,000 sided die and getting 6 on both.

As a teacher what have you done professionally to prepare yourself for this? Have you lobbied for training and arming volunteers at your school? After all these shooters aren't looking for a gunfight they're looking for fame. Have you bothered to take a stop the bleed class? Maybe a class could be put on for faculty and staff at the school after hours. How many tourniquets are at your school? Has anybody practiced with those. I mean it doesn't take an active shooter for a student to have an arterial bleed. 🤷🏼♂️ Several years ago I took an active shooter course in Nashville Tennessee and what I learned was if your response to an active shooter event is to call 911 expect between 20 and 30 casualties. I also learned most people killed in an active shooter event are shot in their hiding place or where they "locked down" This information comes from a study of the history of active shooter events since 1999 Finally what I learned was that the school lockdowns which are so popular with school districts around the country always work just fine until a shooter actually shows up Run fight hide

Be kind to everyone, include everyone. If no one feels alone, left out, hated, unwanted, or just bad in general, this problem will go away. I was in a school “shooting” today and they are taking it like it is a completely normal thing. IT IS NOT. They were not letting us have our phones to tell parents I love them or what was happening. My teacher is Spanish completely so she didn’t know what lock down was. I had to tell her because I was closest to her at the time. I was asking to go to the restroom. I don’t know if any shots were made but I do know that there was a gun and multiple threats. It is the 5 week of school. We have school tomorrow. My mom which is a well known phycologist, just talked to me and told me that this is not at all normal. I was shaking all day today and she told me “ it is your large leg muscles wanting to run or hide” this is super smart to make these back packs or even maybe clothes to wear. But it is so stupid and scary that we have too. I am a 13 year old kid and I am scared to go BACK TO MY OWN SCHOOL, lucky no one got hurt but this was the most scared that I have ever been. My father is a teacher at my school. He teaches 7th grade I am in 8th grade, the grades are separated so i didn’t know if he was ok. Since 8th graders are not allowed to go into the 7th grade hall with a good reason or a slip. I couldn’t go see my dad. We continued our school day all day. The lockdown was in 1st hour I waited all day to see my dad. The only reason I was allowed to is because a am an office worker last hour so I went to see him and he was fine.
