In the 70s I ate lunch frequently at a cafe operated by two retired Navy chefs. They roasted two large hunks of meat every day, with loads of comfort food sides. There was nothing fancy there. The food was A#1 delicious and reasonably priced. Such a treat.

I was in USN from 1963 to 1967 active duty .... best food of my life , the food at the sub base at Pearl Harbor was so good , fresh pineapple , melon , breakfast cooked in front of you, how you wanted .... Christmas Dinner was world class ... I am 79 today and that food was better than moms (sorry mom) and on DDG-11 .. USS Sellers ....pretty good food, lots of roast beef , more roast beef , even more roast beef and sos on a shingle ( that stuff was addicting ) and finally a cook that cook make mouth watering bear claws ....

Watching this video reminds me that when I was in the Army as a cook many years ago that everyone knew that the NAVY and the AIR FORCE got the best food and not even the MARINES no way. But I could out cook the NAVY and the AIR force and they knew it, not that I am boasting but seeing is believing, I could make the whole food menu for the BATTALION and I did it all the time, given the equipment that we were given, even c rations is MRES.

as a former army special forces officer, i’ve eaten the food of all four branches in their various bases. Navy had the best chow hands down but I was on Army bases where the NCO in charge chef was exceptional and award winning and beat the hell out of anything that I had had from a navy base. The cooks of SF group may have not been award winning but I will attest that I never had one damn complaint about what they served us when we where in the field and was always happy to get in line for chow when it was time.

The term "Chef" oftentimes is used to classify cooks when in reality the Navy "Chef" is someone who has completed Navy cooking school. Take Jacques Pepin or Julia Child for an example. These two people are Chefs from the gitgo. They trained for years and traveled around the world learning their craft. Before some of you try to hammer me with rebuttal I am taking nothing away from Navy cooks, especially the sub cooks. One of our cooks went to the White House as a kitchen staff member. But if you called him a "Chef" to his face he would he would laugh at you.

Wow times have changed, when I was in the Navy we got mashed potatoes with the peeling still on. And they are way better that way. Spoiled today, peeling potatoes for mashed potatoes "Come on Man" :) and submariners have it lucky eating under the waves. Believe me trying to eat topside in a storm is an experience you'll never forget.
